9 Chapter Summaries 1 – 5 Chapter 1: Tris & her mom talk about the Aptitude Test. Tris & Caleb ride the bus to school. Tris watches the Dauntless students. Chapter 2: Tris waits with Caleb, Susan, and other members of her faction for the Aptitude Test. Tris takes the Aptitude Test, which is administered by Dauntless member, Tori. Chapter 3: Tris’s Aptitude Test ends. Tori erases Tris’s results from the computer and inputs them manually. Tori tells Tris she's Divergent and warns her to tell no one. The Aptitude Test rules out Candor andAmity, which leaves Tris with Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless to choose from. As Tris is walking home from the test, she encounters “the Factionless Man.” He warns her to choose wisely.

10 Chapter Summaries 1 – 5 Chapter 4: Tris waits for Caleb on their front porch steps. Caleb & Tris won’t discuss what happened during their tests. They cook dinner, then eat with their parents, where they talk about the Aptitude Test and a report that Jeanine Matthews released that day, stating that Marcus was violent and cruel to his son (causing him to choose Dauntless). Tris thinks about the choice she will have to make the following day. Chapter 5: Tris and the others ride the bus to the Hub for the Choosing Ceremony. Marcus gives a speech and facilitates the Choosing Ceremony. Caleb chooses Erudite. Tris chooses Dauntless.

18 Novel Study Requirements Character analysis – you will choose 2 major characters and one minor character to use in your analysis (more info to come) Vocabulary – you will choose a minimum of 50 words to be used as new vocabulary words. You will provide the word and definition, which chapter the word first appears, and will use it in a sentence. These must be 8 th grade level words (use your WordSkills workbook for guidance). Chapter Summaries – you will provide a 2-3 sentence chapter summary for each chapter. If your book is 20 chapters or more, you may group them to have at least 10 entries. Chapter quizzes– you will provide 5 questions with answers for each chapter. If your book is 20 chapters or more, you may group them to have at least 10 entries. Final Project – to be determined.

19 Novel Study Grading Scale – 925 points Character analysis –125 points (100 two major characters; 25 one minor character) Vocabulary – 200 points (4 points per word/50 words – yes, you can get earn extra credit points) Chapter Summaries – 200 points (20 points per summary) Chapter quizzes– 200 points (20 points per quiz) Project – 200 points.

20 Character List: Beatrice “Tris” Prior: 16-year-old protagonist. Born and raised in Abnegation faction, but chooses Dauntless. However, her aptitude test says she is "Divergent" - a fate that is mysterious but also dangerous. Once in Dauntless, she becomes Tris. Tris is strong-willed, courageous, and reluctant to show weakness. Still feels strong ties to the family she left behind. Tobias/Four: The initiation instructor for Dauntless transfer initiates. Known as “Four,” because during Dauntless initiation it was revealed that he has four fears. Born Abnegation, but chose to transfer to Dauntless to escape his father. He is very protective of his loved ones. Christina: Born in Candor, but transfers to Dauntless. Becomes friends with Tris when she helped her jump onto the moving train. Begins a relationship with Will. Because of her Candor upbringing, Christina can be very blunt and honest, but she is brave, witty, and loyal. Eric: born in Erudite, but became a Dauntless initiation leader along with Four. Because Four finished first in their own initiation class and Eric second, Eric has hated him ever since. During training, he is extremely harsh on the initiates. Cruel and emphasizes cutthroat strength over intelligence and teamwork. Caleb: Tris’s brother. Chooses to transfer to Erudite. Had a secret fondness for books and a inquisitive nature that he worked hard to keep hidden. Caleb and Tris are very close siblings.

21 Albert: transferred to Dauntless from Candor. Has trouble adjusting, and breaks down in tears on their first night in the Dauntless dormitory. Because of his soft and fragile personality, he continuously throws all fights during initiation. He has a crush on Tris, but she does not return the sentiment. He kills himself after taking part in an attack on Tris. Jeanine: The leader of Erudite faction, selected solely based on her IQ score. She is the main antagonist in the novel, and seeks to form an alliance between Dauntless and Erudite against Abnegation. Molly: Molly Atwood is a Candor-born Dauntless initiate, and one of Peter’s lackeys along with Drew. She mercilessly teases Tris, growing extremely angry with her after Tris beats her in a fight and causes her ranking to be low. As revenge she gets an Erudite reporter to write a vicious article about Tris’s father. Will: close friends with Tris from Dauntless initiation. Transferred to Dauntless from Erudite, and his intelligence and wit was immediately apparent to the other initiates. At first, Will and Christina were prone to arguing, but eventually they begin a relationship.

30 Character Analysis 1)Pay attention to the character’s ethics. Does the character make just or unjust choices? 2)Decide whether the character’s actions are wise or unwise. 3)What is the character’s motivation? As you are mulling over the pros and cons of each character’s internal thoughts and external actions, you will want to also consider why the character is acting or thinking in a particular way. 4)Consider the effects of the character’s behavior on other characters. 5)Look for repeatedly used words that describe the character. Those words often give insight into a character’s psychology and motivations.

Refrain from making modern judgments about the past; put the character’s actions and thoughts in context. 10) Finally, what does the author think? Look for any of the author’s own judgments about the characters he or she has created.

She changes her name to “Tris.” Chapter 7: Four is their trainer. Tris meets Eric. Tris hears Al cry himself to sleep. Chapter 8: Four teaches the initiates how to shoot. They begin training to fight. Tris changes her looks and gets 3 tattoos. Chapter 9: Will and Al fight. Al wins. Christina and Molly fight. Christina, after begin beaten but still conscious, quits. Eric makes her hang over the ravine as punishment. Chapter 10: Tris’s bunk is spray painted with the word, “stiff.” Tris and Peter fight. Tris is beaten to the point of unconsciousness. She wakes up in the hospital. She returned to the dorm in the middle of the night.

50 WARM UP: 3/18/15 Find 10 Errors You may think that paper monie has been around for a long time, but in the United States, the first paper money was not introduced until march 10, 1862. On that day, the United States Government issued it’s first paper money in the form of $5, $10, and $20 bill. Since then the look of the money has changed segnifuncuntly. For example the first five dollar bill featured Alexander Hamilton. Abraham Lincoln did not appear on the five dollar bill we know today untill 1929. Other bills have changed to. For example, the $20 bill featured lady Liberty, Pocahontas, and Grover Cleveland, before settling on Andrew Jackson on 1928.
