The Lead The most important paragraph in the story is the lead because it gets your reader into the story. If you have a boring lead, then the read will stop and no matter what you say at the end of the story, they will not read it. The Lead summarizes the most important information: who, what, when, where, why, and how. Does your lead answer the 5Ws and one H? If not, revise.

Feature Lead Examples 1. Anecdotal lead You can start your personality feature with a story that relates to the FOCUS of the feature. Anecdote Example When sophomore Kelly Miller was ten years old, her favorite activity was playing video games.Every weekend Kelly spent hours playing. Her parents were angry that she spent so much time on the computer, but things changed when she became interested in creating video games of her own to share with her friends. She took some Java in school and learned to program and today at 14 years old she is a video game producer. FOCUS of this story will be on Kelly’s video game interest.

2. Descriptive Lead or Setting the Scene This lead is a description of the person or of the setting or place. You can start off by describing them and their behavior. The description must tie to the FOCUS of the feature. Descriptive Example The young student could pass for any ninth grader at Jefferson High School. He dressed in sloppy jeans, a t-shirt, and Nike shoes and was running through the rain to his fourth period class. What set him apart from his other students was the way he ran. Bradley Smith, freshman, was the top runner at the school even though he was just a freshman.FOCUS of this story will be on the running

Writing a Caption Elements of a Caption: Description of the action Do not simply tell what is obvious in the photo. Tell who, what, when, where, why, and how Make sure to identify everyone by name, grade, or position.

Your Self-Portrait Due Monday 8/25 Must include the following: You! (Either in the photo or drawn) At least 5 elements/items/symbols that reveal who you are and what is important to you. A photo caption including the 5Ws and 1H. An anecdote or descriptive lead to begin your story.
