2 What parts make a house? Walls Roof Doors and windows

3 Where do you live? What kind of building do you live in?

4 People can live… In a House

5 People can live… In an Apartment

6 It can be… A Large Apartment Building

7 Or… An Older Building

8 Or it might be… A Duplex

9 It could be… A Very Small House

10 Or A Very Large House

11 It might be A Plain House

12 Or maybe A Very Fancy House

13 All houses have A Roof

14 The roof can be Low or High

15 The roof can be Flat or Wavy

16 Maybe the roof could be Funny Or Fancy

17 Or even covered in Shiny Green Tile

18 Sometimes a roof is covered in Wooden Shingles called “Shakes”

19 But most often a roof is covered in Just … Shingles

20 All houses have Walls

21 The walls can be made of Wood Brick Stone Stucco

22 All Houses Have Doors

23 All Houses Have Windows

24 Many Houses Have A Porch That is supported by…

25 Columns or Posts

26 You might see on your building… a Chimney

27 You might see on your building… Shutters

29 You might see on your building… Fancy trim – Called “Gingerbread Trim”

30 All buildings have some things the same They all have: Walls Roof Doors and windows

31 But buildings - and houses - can look very different from each other If you designed a house, what would it look like?

32 When an architect designs a building, usually he or she will Draw a sketch – A sketch is a simple drawing to help you work on ideas and problems

33 The architect will often - Draw an elevation – An elevation drawing Shows one side of the building It looks very flat It shows details or

34 The elevation drawing will often be shown to the client A client is– The person or group or people who have hired the architect to create the design The client must approve the design or the architect must make changes There are more types of drawings and plans that must be prepared to get ready to build a house An architect must learn a lot about buildings!

35 Can you draw a sketch of a building? Can you draw an elevation of your building? Maybe you would like to become an architect!
