32. Frankincense tears
Frankincense resin is derived from frankincense trees. The resin is obtained by making a deep, longitudinal incision in the trunk of the tree. When the tree is cut, a sticky, white resin oozes out onto the trunk and congeals with exposure to the air. Once the resin has hardened sufficiently after a number of weeks, it is scraped off the tree into baskets. A second incision is then made but the quality of the incense from the second harvest is inferior to the first. At the third harvest, the resin forms into yellow "tears", which produces the best incense. The season for gathering frankincense is April to mid-September.
The aroma from these tear resins is valued for its presumed healing properties and superior qualities for religious rituals since the time of the ancient Egyptians, and has been used in incense, fumigants, and as a fixative in perfumes.

Although it is better known as "frankincense" to westerners, the resin is also known as olibanum, which is derived from the Arabic al-lubān (roughly translated: "that which results from milking"), a reference to the milky sap tapped from the Boswellia tree. Some have also postulated that the name comes from the Arabic term for "Oil of Lebanon" since Lebanon was the place where the resin was sold and traded with Europeans.
Tree Resins can be ground down to a fine powder, and mixed with herbs and oils, to create some wonderful magickal and aromatic incense blends. Resin incense may be burned whole, right out of the package, as well. In magick, resin incense will be burned to help create the energy and state of mind, necessary for the working. The resin incense's energies, released from their physical form are mixed with those of the magician, and sent out into the world, to help manifest the goal. Many practitioners, use only herbal and resin incenses for the purity of the energies involved.
