Traceability at work in the Australian Meat Sector Standards for item identification and electronic communication enable visibility throughout the supply chain

GS1 DataBar prelaunch 2010 2014 for global uptake Benefits include: Designed for bar coding small or irregular-shaped products Better control over products exceeding their expiry dates Scanning of fresh food products reducing key punch errors Better control of inventories, shrinkage, and product recalls GS1 Bar Code evolves with industry needs New Bar codes – GS1 DataBar

Different mobile barcodes Some key questions from brands and retailers: How can we ensure only our approved data is made available to consumers? How can we ensure we develop scalable and interoperable systems? How often will these technologies change? Industry is exploring ways of engaging with consumers via extended labeling… … but the market is fragmented with… Mobile Portals Different information sources Websites Crowd Sourcing 3 rd Party Databases Mobile Apps Different mobile devices

Drivers for Extended Labelling data 1.Consumers demand significant product data to make purchasing decisions 2.Retailers are driving online initiatives, Mobile apps and other in-store services 3.Government food labelling review as well as other government initiatives, such as the National Food Composition Database for monitoring nutrition policy as part of the Food & Health Dialogue 4.3rd Party providers delivering online services using questionable sources for product data

What is GS1 GoScan? A smart phone application designed to deliver detailed product data to shoppers via scanning a barcode or via a text based search. Key functions include: Country of origin statement Ingredient lists Allergen and consumer declarations NIP data Instructions for use, storage and precautions Dietary information Text, scanning and GTIN based product searches Definitions of key terms Click through to websites, Facebook, Twitter, etc Reports to monitor usage activity

In June 2009, with leadership from the Australian Food and Grocery Council leading manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies started collaborating to establish a single web based portal Online notification portal enables trading partners to have a direct & secure relationship regarding product recalls Standard form and notification workflow Ensures that only authorised recalls are issued Targeted, secure communication with recipient specific data Incorporates notification to regulators (FSANZ, TGA, ACCC) Recipients receive recalls immediately and respond Complete audit trail reduces risk and confusion Complete data to enable product removal (inc images & attachments) Easy to use with online help & data valuation for greater compliance Based on global standards and a global, scalable platform Web based portal for the management of Recall & Withdrawal notifications.

What does the future hold … Industry Designed Roadmap to Enhanced Functionality Structured responses for better tracking & reporting SMS notifications to recipients Creation of Safe Zone to practice recalls Full database integration via XML file interface Integration with GS1net Integration with GoScan application http://www.gs1au.org/services/recallnet/

GS1Locatenet A central directory of GS1 standard, unique Global Location Numbers (GLNs) which identify physical, operational and legal locations. GLNs may be assigned to pricing locations, ship-from locations, ship-to destinations, eMessaging addresses and more

GS1’S VISION Enabling Product Recall GS1 Traceability Standard GS1net Accurate Item Data GS1locatenet Accurate Location Data GS1Barcodes Automatic Data Capture GS1recallnet Accurate Item Data Unique Identifiers Where are products shipped to? What locations are affected? What products do I have? Who do I buy them from? How do I Identify them? How can I id affected products? How much product do I have? How many units sold? Recall details? Batches affected? Shipments affected? Recall Reporting? Manufacturer/ Distributor Retailer / Outlet Public / Consumer GS1 mobile commerce Extended packaging Mobile B2C communications Auto alerts to consumers Based on mobile phone scanning Ultimate Vision
