2 Definition An ADVERB describes, or modifies, a verb, adjective, or another adverb. VERBS People handle old violins carefully. ADJECECTIVES Very old violins are valuable. ADVERBS Orchestras almost always include violins.

3 adverbs ADverbS can tell how, when, or where. HOW? Chan happily plays ball. WHEN? Often the team travels on the bus. WHERE? My sister ran downstairs.

4 adverbs When an AdVERB modifies an adjective or another adverb, the AdVERB usually comes before the word it modifies. Harry Truman became a very popular president. Truman entered politics unusually late in life.

5 adverbs When an AdVERB modifies a verb, the AdVERB can occupy different positions in a sentence. Guests often dine at the White House. Guests dine often at the White House. Often guests dine at the White House. Guests dine at the White House often.

6 Adverbs that don’t end in -ly Many AdVERBs are formed by adding –ly to adjectives. On the other hand, not all AdVERBs end in –ly.
