Care home survey Hastings & Bexhill

Why survey care home residents?  The Seniors Forums are two of seven which make up East Sussex Seniors Association (ESSA)  ESSA is the combined voice of seniors living in the county

Why survey care home residents? Aims of the survey:  To give care home residents a voice  To promote membership of the Seniors Forums

What did we do?  Developed a survey that asked about key aspects of care home life  Contacted care home managers to ask them to take part  Gave out packs of surveys and information leaflets to managers  Collected in all completed surveys

What did we do?  Collated all the results to create a Summary Report  Produced an individual report for each care home with their results  Shared the Summary Report with the care homes, East Sussex County Council and LINk

What did we ask?  How comfortable their care home is,  Whether they can talk to staff about their needs,  Whether staff act upon their requests,  Whether any complaints have been dealt with,

What did we ask?  For their views on choice and control, meals, activities and visitors,  What they like and don’t like, and  What they would change.

Who took part?  18 care homes took part  119 residents completed a survey  Some people were helped to take part by family (32 people), friends (8 people) and staff (32 people)

What did we learn?  97% of residents are very satisfied or satisfied with their care home  99% say their care home is a comfortable place to live  96% say they can talk to staff about their needs

What did we learn?  Over three quarters say that staff always listen and act when they ask for a change in their care  Just under a quarter said staff sometimes listen

What did we learn?  Staff in particular are praised, with 47 people saying the thing they like most about their care home is the staff

What did we learn?  14% said they had made a complaint in the last year  The majority had their complaint dealt with, although 3 people said it hadn’t been

Areas for improvement  Getting people more involved in planning their own care When asked if staff listen and act when they ask for a change in their care 23% said they don’t and 5% disagree that they have a say in the planning of their care

Areas for improvement  Giving people more chance to take part in activities outside their care home 7% say they don’t have the option and the percentage who strongly agree (36%) is noticeably lower

Areas for improvement  Improve the food on offer Although the number of people who scored the food negatively was quite low there were quite a few people (5) who said the food was the thing they liked the least about their care home

Conclusions?  Overall, the responses are very positive  Residents who took part are generally happy with their care homes and the support provided
