6 + Anxiety Is a condition of hyper arousal of the central nervous system in response to fear or stress Anxiety symptoms in children/teens can range from typical, developmental appropriate systems of worry or fearfulness to the severe systems of anxiety disorders Behaviors that children my exhibit- agitation, combative behavior, rapid breathing, hyper vigilance, trembling, pale, clammy skin, shut down, avoidance Fight or flight, freeze and withdraw

7 + Depression Depression is an illness of the central nervous system that often leads to mood changes, sleep and energy changes and changes in thinking Depression often impacts relationships, academic/work performance, self concept and view of the world Three mood changes associated with depression include sadness, irritability and lack of joy

8 + Maslow’s Hierarchy of Developmental Needs Physiological-Food, water, shelter, warmth Safety-Security, Stability, Order, Freedom from Fear Belonging and Love-Family, Friends Self-Esteem-Self-Worth, Confidence, Recognition Self Actualization-Education, Motivation, Creativity

13 + Principles of Yoga Breathing Breathe in and out through your nose Longer inhalations energize the body and mind Longer exhalations calm the mind Deep even breathing creates relaxed alertness, ideal for learning

14 + Emotional Triggers and Physical Disassociations Extreme resistance to particular poses Holding a part of the body overly still or in an unnatural way Holding the breath Rigid approach to poses Unwillingness to participate in relaxation poses Gazed or distant look in the eyes, gazed upwards Extreme silliness, agitation and inability to follow directions Source: Jim & Lynea Gillen
