2 FUNCTIONS A living room can serve many purposes: Entertainment Reading Relaxing Socializing How can you decide what a living room should best be used for?

3 FUNCTIONS The function(s) of a living room depend on the needs and living habits of the residents. Process of elimination: The function of a living room can also be determined by establishing functions for other indoor living areas. Example: If a house has a den for working, a rec room for activities, and a family room for social gatherings, what could the living room be used for??

5 LOCATION A living room should ideally be located in the center of the home and adjacent to the outside entrance.

6 ORIENTATION A living room should be designed to best accommodate its surroundings. Windows should be placed in the living room to allow for sunlight and attractive views. The afternoon sun would best hit the living room in the Southwestern part of the house.

8 SIZE and SHAPE What would you say is an average- sized living room??? Average = 16’ X 20’ (250-400 square feet) Small = 12’ X 18’ (150-250 square feet) Large = 20’ X 26’ (400+ square feet)

9 SIZE and SHAPE What are some key factors in determining the size of a living room? Type and size of furniture How often the room will be used How many people will use the room at any given time What the room will be used for (single- purpose or multi-purpose)

10 DÉCOR A living room should be designed w/bright colors that complement one another. The décor of a living room should create a certain mood or feel. Examples of décor include: Furniture Wall and floor coverings Windows Fireplaces

12 FURNITURE TEMPLATES Furniture templates are commonly used to show scaled sizes and locations of various pieces of furniture on floor plans.
