e-learning in the European wood and furniture industry An idea drafted by TIB - “The Wood, Industry and Building Workers’ Union in Denmark” and Skive Technical Institute
2
Background Approximately 1,6 mio. employees in the European wood and furniture industry Only approximately 25% of these people are skilled Cabinetmakers - woodworking machinists – joiners - upholsterers The Vet-institutes cannot cope with the need of ongoing changes in the technologically based teaching materials
3
Background Skilled workers have competences achieved during their vocational training and education, and through their working life – but: These competences are very often “old”, especially according to new technology and the use of new materials. The unskilled workers do very often have a very low level of education - in many cases they have no education at all.
4
Background Traditional methods of production Machines Tools Production planning and control A very low level of technology In the product In the production processing and production facilities Everything is very easy to adopt in competing countries
5
Objectives: To equip the target group to handle their present and future labour market situation in a new and improved way. To upgrade the qualifications of industry employees in a flexible and individually customised way at times which suit the individuals concerned. To ensure early school leavers and other persons flexible work and job-related learning. To contribute to the development of a digital culture in adult education and the process of lifelong learning. e-learning in the European wood and furniture industry
6
Contents: We will use the sub-competences from the DEWEBAS, concerning: A: Standard machines (single-function machines) B: Material knowledge from felling to industrial processing C: CAD/CAM and CNC Each learning object/partial skill will consist of several of the following objects: Text-based teaching material Video clips Animation Assessment questions Test – both electronic and practical, depending on the subject area DEWEBAS e-learning in the European wood and furniture industry
7
e-wood and DEWEBAS e-wood learning objects A learning-object in the e-wood project, fit to the sub-competences developed in the DEWEBAS project. A learning-object includes all the teaching materials, which are needed for one sub- competence, or a group of sub-competences from the DEWEBAS project. A learning-object includes all the needed media production to make an understandable lesson for the students, and will always include self-evaluation, so that the students themselves can check their understanding status, before they go to the next level of education. The LMCS system saves the results, and the teacher can see the status on every student who participates in a course or a lesson.
8
SCORM and LCMS SCORM Each learning-object will be packed to the SCORM-standard (SCORM = ”Sharable Content Object Reference Model”). A standard defined as a reference model for how to make “sharable” content objects. Contents packed by the SCORM-standard can immediately be distributed to other Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Learning Content Management Systems A SCORM learning-object includes: Text-based materials Videos Animations ScreenCords Evaluation,”-questions, -drag and drop, -multiple choice, ???” Test, both electronic and practical, depending on the subject area. SCORM what is it
9
SCORM and LCMS LCMS This means that if you choose to implement SCORM, you will be independent of platform (LMS/LCMS) and development tools. The produced learning-objects can also be used separately in other connections (courses or other learning objects). If for instance some fine learning objects about the system of co-ordinates have been made, they could be used in for instance mathematics’ courses, CNC-courses etc. In the LMS “Learning management system”, any teacher can make a course, and make logins for the students who participate in the course. The teacher can also put the learning-objects packed in SCORM into the course, in that way the teacher can organize a learning situation that fits into the student’s level of education. Development of videos - "films" - showing processes in the woodworking industry 4. Development of evaluation questions for learning modules 5. Translation of text-based material into mother tongue 6. Speak for films and animations in mother tongue 7. Development of project website 8. Development of platform on the Internet for the e-learning modules 9. Description of the pedagogic aspects, which form the basis of the concept 10. Test of the e-learning platform at schools 11. Test of the e-learning platform at companies 12. Work with the pedagogic concept on the basis of different learning styles within the target group 13. Test centres for practical evaluation 14. Dissemination and foundation of project results in the learning structure 15. Description of technical problems, which should be taken into account 16. National coordinator 17. Management 18.
