1. The Mean Geese By Geri Murray

2. Scat went to the creek. She wanted to teach her kittens to sneak into the weeds for things to eat. When she got near the stream, she met some big geese. These geese were mean. They honked and scared her kittens.

3. Lad was feeling hot. He went to the stream for a drink. "Honk, honk!" went the geese.

4. Lad could see Scat hiss at the geese. That cat was mad! Lad wanted to help Scat and her kittens flee from the mean geese. They needed to reach a safe place.

5. Then the geese saw Lad. Lad played with the geese to tease them. But the geese ran at Lad and nipped at his feet. He let them see his mean teeth, but the geese did not fear Lad. Lad feared the geese!

6. Lad could not keep the geese back. They chased Lad into the stream. Lad swam to leave the geese. The geese swam to chase Lad.

7. Lad jumped from the creek into the mud. His feet were thick with mud. But Lad was safe from the mean geese.

8. Mom, Bess and Jan had a big mess to clean at home. Jess and Ben helped her clean. At last Mom said, "It is so neat. That’s my team!"

9. Then Jess saw Lad jump on the screen. She squealed, "It's Lad! And he has mud on his feet!"

10. Ben yelled, "Lad, get back! Freeze!" But Lad was so glad to see Jess and Ben, he leaped in and left a wet, muddy mess. Ben pleaded, "No, Lad. Stay. Please!"

11. Lad wagged his tail and sat. Ben breathed easy. He stepped up to lead Lad back. Then Lad jumped up to shake himself. What a mess! Jess, Ben, and Mom got wet with mud spots.

12. Mom said, "This will not be easy to clean. Ben, Take Lad back to the stream.” But the geese were waiting for Lad. Lad and Ben had to flee from the mean geese.

13. Mom and Jess ran to see the geese chase Ben and Lad. “I see that Lad will not want to tease the geese again," said Mom.
