1 Through Penetration Firestops

2 Through Penetration Firestops Topics for discussion
What is a firestop? How is a firestop tested? What is a firestop system? How is a firestop installed?

3 What is a firestop?

4 Firestopping is: The process of restoring the hourly rating back to fire barrier walls and floors (that have lost their fire rating from penetrations, joints and other openings) using materials tested to ASTM E-814, UL1479. ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials

5 Passive Compartmentation
Firestopping is: Passive Compartmentation Prevention: Suppression: Containment: The fire is not permitted to start. The fire is extinguished after it is started. This is known as Active Suppression. Sometimes referred to as Passive Compartmentation. The fire is prevented from progressing to another area. This is also known as“PASSIVE” fire protection.

7 How is a firestop tested?

8 ASTM E814 (UL 1479): Fire Test for Through-Penetration Firestops
Main Criteria for Through-Penetration Firestop Systems: T-Rating: Max. temp. rise of 325 °F above ambient on the non-fireside F-Rating: Prohibits flame passage through the system for the duration of the fire test. L-Rating: Amount of air leakage Hose Stream Performance Required (UL Canada Optional)

9 ASTM E 119 TIME - TEMPERATURE CURVE

10 The through penetrants are installed in the floor or wall using various firestopping materials. It is exposed to the ASTM-E-814 fire temperatures .

11 When the burn is complete, the test assembly is lifted from the furnace and immediately prepared for the hosestream test.

12 A hose stream test, performed in accordance with UL1479, is conducted after the fire exposure test.

13 Visual examination of penetrations after hose stream test

20 What is a Firestop System?

21 A firestop system is a specific construction consisting of a wall or floor assembly, a penetrating item passing through an opening in the wall or floor assembly, and the materials designed to prevent the spread of fire through the openings.

22 Time is the key in Fire Protection Systems
Time is the key in Fire Protection Systems. In construction of buildings, fire-rated walls and floors of various materials have requirements of being penetrated by many different items such as pipes, cables and HVAC ducts. These constructions require the correct through penetration (Firestop ) system to provide the fire protection needed.

23 The following slides depict a building and the areas within that building that might require firestopping. Joints are shown as well as through stop application even though this presentation is geared toward only through stop applications.

33 Firestop systems are not merely the tube of caulk bearing the UL classification symbol.
The firestop system consists of a TESTED and APPROVED method of installation which includes size of opening, maximum penetrating item number and size, depths of forming material and or sealants or firestop devices required.

34 Typical applications require firestop caulk, putty etc
Typical applications require firestop caulk, putty etc. to be installed on one side in floors and from both sides of wall applications.

35 Approved and tested systems for various firestop systems are contained within the UL Fires Resistance Directory.

36 Example : UL System - Through Penetration

37 Identifying System Variables:
THROUGH PENETRATION FIRESTOP SYSTEMS (XHEZ) First Alpha Character – signifies what is being penetrated F = Floors W = Walls C = Walls and Floors

Example : UL System - Through Penetration C-AJ-1415 Floor, Wall or Combination

39 Identifying System Variables
THROUGH PENETRATION FIRESTOP SYSTEMS (XHEZ) Following Alpha Character(s) – wall or floor construction type A = Concrete floors  5 inch thick B = Concrete floors  5 inch thick C = Framed floors D = Steel decks in marine vessels E-I = Reserved for future use J = Concrete or masonry walls  8 inch thick K = Concrete or masonry walls  8 inch thick L = Framed walls M = Bulkheads in marine vessels N-Z = Reserved for future use

41 Identifying System Variables
THROUGH PENETRATION FIRESTOP SYSTEMS (XHEZ)  Numeric Component – first digit identifies the type of penetrant, next three are sequential system numbering = No Penetrant = Metallic pipe, conduit or tubing = Plastic pipe, conduit or tubing = Electrical cables = Cable trays with electrical cables = Insulated pipes = Bus ducts = HVAC ducts = Mixed multiple penetrations = Reserved for future use

44 How is a Firestop Installed?

45 Firestop products are offered in several forms:
Sealants - Typically installed using a caulk gun Mortars - Mixed and troweled Putty - Installed by hand Coatings - Sprayed or brushed Wrap Strip - Installed by hand Devices - Installed by hand
