1 Review Questions 1. Name the 3 branches of U.S. Government 2. The first ten amendments are called what? 3. Define Popular Sovereignty

2  Delegated Powers  Powers granted to the federal government Coining money, regulating trade, country’s defense, declare war, conduct diplomacy  Reserved Powers  Powers kept by the state governments or by the citizens Creating local governments and holding elections  Concurrent Powers  Powers that the federal and state government share Taxing, borrowing money, enforcing laws, providing citizens’ welfare

3  The Elastic Clause or the “necessary and proper” clause allows for Congress to make laws that are necessary to help it complete tasks and responsibilities  Provides flexibility for the government

4  For our government to work correctly, citizens have responsibility to complete certain tasks  Elect leaders to make laws  Obey laws  Communicate with representatives  Stay informed and vote  Pay taxes  Serve on juries

5  1st  About the most basic human rights  2, 3, and 4  Relate to colonial disputes with GB before the Revolution  5, 6, 7, and 8  Guidelines for trying people accused of crimes  9 and 10  General protections for individual rights not addressed by the first 8 amendments

6  1 st RAPPS: Religion, Assembly (hold meetings), Press, Petition (make a request), Speech Free speech does not mean people can say whatever they want Does not protect slander- false statements Libel- intentionally publishing a lie that harms another person Speech that endangers public safety Meetings must be peaceful and not involving illegal activity

7  2 nd  Right to bear arms  3 rd  Prevents military from forcing citizens to house soldiers  4 th  Unreasonable Search and Seizures Need to get a search warrant first

8  5 th  Cannot punish anyone without due process of the law (law should be fairly applied)  Prevent people from being forced to testify against themselves in a criminal trial: “plead the fifth”  Double jeopardy  6 th  Quick public trial by jury  7 th  Juries decide civil cases

9  8 th  No excessive bail Does not apply to very serious crimes or for those who may flee to avoid trial  Cruel and unusual punishment  9 th  The rights listed in the constitution are not the only rights citizens have (education)  10 th  States and the people have the additional power beyond those named in the Constitution
