6 * As you are researching your movie, use either technique as a way to evaluate the validity of the source you are considering using in your paper. * If you don’t think a source is credible, do not use it. * The question you are addressing and a thesis for your research paper is due next class (A 1/14 & B 1/15) for a quiz grade!

9 What’s New: * Archetypal Criticism * For purposes of Othello, we used archetypal criticism to talk about recurring characters. * However, archetypal criticism also deals with: * Recurring images * Water, sun, different colors * Recurring motifs and patterns * Creation stories, the quest, voyage to the underworld, coming of age stories

10 What’s New: * Characterization (character development) * The social and cultural implications of presenting a text from a particular critical theory * Stage directions, dialogue, action, subtext, costume, and set design

11 On p. 90, answer the two essential questions: * How does applying a critical perspective affect an understanding of the text? * How does a new understanding of a text gained through interpretation help or hinder your enjoyment of it?
