2 Genres Lyric Poetry – Poetry that focuses on expressing emotions or thoughts, rather than telling a story. Narrative Poetry – a poem that tells a story Elegy – A poem that mourns the death of a person or laments something lost. Sonnet – A fourteen-line lyric poem, usually written in iambic pentameter, that has one of several rhyme schemes. Realism – In literature and are, the attempt to depict people and tings as they really are, without idealization. Dramatic Dialogue – A poem in which a character addresses one or more listeners who remain silent or whose replies are not revealed. Short Story – A brief work of fiction

4 Sonnet Elizabeth Barret Browning – Sonnet 43 – Petrarchan Sonnet – Does not have the usual break in thought – Broken into short units of thoughts Realism Charles Dickens- Most popular and important figure Conventional happy endings Most memorable scenes show decent people neglected, exploited, & abused. Children esp. endure terrible suffereing. – Oliver Twist – A Christmas Carol – Our Mutual Friend.

Short Story Guy de Mauspassant – The Jewels – Focuses on problems of real people. – Known for their realistic details, brisk pacing, concentration on essentials, and unexpected plot twists. – Only uses a few sentences to describe major events and characters.
