Dress For Success First impressions are critical. You want your personality, drive, commitment to the profession, and understanding of the business world to stand out… NOT YOUR CLOTHES!

General Guidelines Select apparel, fragrances, jewelry, hairstyle that do not detract from your professional image. Make sure your hair is clean, neat and professionally styled. Remove facial and body piercings other than single ear jewelry. Visible tattoos should be covered to avoid distraction. Apparel should be clean and neatly pressed. Less is more.

Women’s Attire Suits & Dresses –A suit or tailored dress is the most professional attire. –Choosing a conservative, classic style is a good choice because it is versatile and a good investment.

Accessories and Jewelry Accessories such as handbags, belts and scarves should be coordinated with your outfit. Accessories used in moderation add style; too many add confusion. Stay away from dangling earrings, multiple rings and noisy bracelets. Jewelry that moves too much or makes noise is distracting.

Hair, Nails and Makeup Your hair should be neat, clean and controlled. Nails should be short and well groomed. When applying makeup, aim for a natural look that enhances your appearance and does not overwhelm.

What to Avoid Wrinkled clothes Wearing something too trendy or too “loud.” Short skirts, dresses and low cut or see through blouses. Strong perfume and scented lotions

Men’s Attire Suits and Shirts –The best choice for fabric for a suit is pure wool or wool-blend in navy or charcoal gray with or without pin- stripes. –Wear traditional cotton or cotton-blend shirts with long sleeves and straight or button collars.

Ties The best fabric for ties is silk, followed by polyester that looks like silk and silk-polyester blends. The tie should just reach your belt buckle.

Jewelry and Grooming Watches, wedding rings and conservative men’s rings are appropriate in any situation. Steer clear of items like bracelets and earrings which convey a more casual look. Personal hygiene is essential in all professional settings, including clean and well- groomed hair; clean and healthy nails; and well- groomed facial hair.

What to Avoid Flashy ties! Strong cologne Unpolished, scuffed-up shoes Wrinkled shirt

What is Business Casual? Business casual is crisp, neat and should look appropriate even for a chance meeting with a CEO. It should not look like cocktail, party or picnic attire. Avoid tight or baggy clothing Business casual is classic rather than trendy

What is not Business Casual? T-shirts Sweatshirts Rumpled clothes Flip-flops Jeans Tennis shoes Tight or short skirts

Business Casual for Women Casual pants or skirts-fabrics should be crisp and colors generally solid-navy, black, gray, brown or khaki. Tailored shirts or blouses, tailored sweaters and sweater sets are appropriate. Keep your choices simple and lean toward conservative.

Business Casual for Men Khaki, solid-navy, black, gray and brown pants, neatly pressed, and a pressed long-sleeve, buttoned solid shirt are best. Polo shirts, unwrinkled, are an appropriate choice if you know the environment will be quite casual. Wear a belt and leather shoes-athletic shoes are inappropriate.
