3. About the Company  Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, a married couple who worked at Stanford University founded Cisco Systems in 1984.  The name “Cisco” is an abbreviation of San Francisco.  Company’s logo is inspired from Golden Gate Bridge’s figure.

6. Timeline  Cisco shipped its first product, the MEIS Subsystem (Ethernet interface for DECSYSTEM- 20) in 1985.  The company went public in 1990. Bosack and Lerner walked away from the company with $170 million.  In 1999 Cisco acquired Cerent Corp. For about $7 billion. That was the most expensive acquisition at that time.

7. Timeline  In March 2000 Cisco was the most valuable company in the world.  In 2003 Cisco acquired Linksys, a computer networking hardware manufacturer.

10. A Story of Success… The basic idea behind Cisco was to find easier ways to connect different types of computer systems. Without doubt it was not an easy job. On the other hand they were not the first company to develop and sell a router, but the company was the first who created a commercially successfull multi-protocol router.
