3 Aim of Summer Training To give a set portion of the Army Cadet population instruction and opportunities to develop advanced knowledge and skills in specialized activities. To develop instructors/leaders for these specialized activities. Version 2015

4 Categories of Training
General Training Basic Intermediate / Instructor Advanced Training Two week course designed to introduce cadets to summer training. Three week courses designed to enhance knowledge and skills in specialized activities. Six week courses designed to further develop instructors/leaders in specialized activities. Various courses designed to advance senior cadets’ leadership skills. Version 2015

5 General Training Course Course Aim
General Training - Army (Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT) This course is intended to familiarize cadets with the Army Cadet Summer Training Program and to motivate them toward pursuing further Army Cadet Training. Expedition Drill and Ceremonial Marksmanship Music Sports and Fitness CAF familiarization Communications Adventure Training Version 2015

6 General Training Course Who can attend?
12 and 13 years of age Completed the Green Star level Physically fit and in good health Recommended by the Corps’ Commanding Officer and approved by RCSU (NW). Version 2015

7 General Training Course Course Dates
General Training - Army (Two Weeks) 6 – 17 July 20 – 31 July 3 – 14 August Course dates do not include travel days. Cadets must be prepared to travel up to two days prior to and after the course dates. Version 2015

8 Basic Courses Course Aim
Basic Expedition ( Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT) The aim of this training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be a participant in a five-day expedition. The cadets will travel by canoe on flat water, travel by mountain bike on novice trails, navigate using a trail map during a hike, work as a team, and further develop skills learned in the Corps Program. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for Basic Expedition. Version 2015

9 Basic Courses Course Aim
Basic Fitness and Sports (Cold Lake, AB) The aim of this training is to prepare cadets to perform the duties of a Basic Fitness and Sports Assistant while continuing to develop personal fitness and healthy living skills. Upon successful completion of this course, the cadet will be able to follow a personal fitness routine, lead a warm up and cool down session, assist with the cadet fitness assessment, and assist with recreational sports at the corps. 10 Basic Courses Course Aim
Basic Drill and Ceremonial (Vernon, BC) The aim of this training is to prepare cadets to perform the role of a peer leader while building upon the leadership and drill and ceremonial knowledge and skills learned through the Corps Program. Cadets will have the opportunity to lead team-building activities, command a squad, execute rifle drill as a member of a squad, and participate in a recreational summer biathlon activity. 11 Basic Courses Course Aim
Basic Marksman (Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT) The aim of this training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be participant during local air rifle marksmanship competitions. Cadets will have the opportunity to hone their marksmanship techniques, and participate in a recreational summer biathlon activity. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for Basic Marksman. Version 2015

12 Basic Courses Course Aim
Military Band – Basic Musician (Vernon, BC) The aim of this training is to develop music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their corps’ military band. Cadets will also have the opportunity to further develop their skills in drill and ceremonial, and leadership learned during the Corps Program. Version 2015

13 Basic Courses Course Aim
Pipe Band – Basic Musician (Ghost River, AB) The aim of this training is to develop music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their corps’ pipe band. Cadets will also have the opportunity to further develop their skills in drill and ceremonial, and leadership learned during the Corps Program. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for Pipe Band – Basic Musician at RMNCTC. 14 Basic Courses Who can attend?
13 and 14 years of age Completed the Red Star level Physically fit and in good health Recommended by the Corps’ Commanding Officer and approved by RCSU (NW). Version 2015

15 Basic Courses Course Dates
Basic Courses (Three Weeks) July 27 July - 14 August Course dates do not include travel days. Cadets must be prepared to travel up to two days, each way, prior to and after the course dates. Version 2015

16 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor (Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT) Based on the training resulting from this course, cadets will further develop air rifle marksmanship, summer biathlon, leadership, and instructional techniques knowledge and skills learned during the Corps Program. Selection of cadets will be based on interest in marksmanship / coaching and not on marksmanship results. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor. Version 2015

17 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Drill and Ceremonial Instructor (Vernon, BC) Based on the training resulting from this course, the cadet will further develop drill and ceremonial related specialist skills and knowledge that will allow them to perform the duties of a specialist instructor and team leader for ceremonial activities, and further develop skills learned in the Corps Program. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for Drill and Ceremonial Instructor. Version 2015

18 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Expedition Instructor (Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT) Based on the training resulting from this course, the cadet will further develop expedition related specialist skills and knowledge that will allow them to perform the duties of a specialist instructor and team leader during expedition training, act as a participant in a long-duration expedition (18 days), travel by a variety of means (canoe, mountain bike, and hiking), perform field maintenance on expedition equipment (mountain bikes, stoves, tents, packs, water filters, etc), and navigate using a route card. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for Expedition Instructor. Version 2015

19 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Fitness and Sports Instructor (Cold Lake, AB) Based on the training resulting from this course, cadets will be able to promote physical fitness and perform the role of a specialist instructor and team leader for fitness and sports activities conducted at the Corps, during Regionally Directed Activities, and/or as a Staff Cadet at CTC. Version 2015

20 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Fullbore Marksmanship Phase 1 (Connaught, ON) Based on the training resulting from this course, the cadet will develop specialist skills and knowledge that will allow them to compete as an individual in a fullbore marksmanship competition. This qualification is one phase in the preparation of cadets for competitive fullbore marksmanship at an international level. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for Fullbore Marksmanship Phase 1. Version 2015

21 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Military Band – Intermediate Musician (Vernon, BC) Based on the training resulting from this course, cadets will be able to further develop music, drill and ceremonial, and leadership knowledge and skills learned during the Corps Program and/or Regionally Directed Activities. Version 2015

22 Intermediate Courses Course Aim
Pipe Band – Intermediate Musician (Ghost River, AB) Based on the training resulting from this course, cadets will be able to further develop music, drill and ceremonial, and leadership knowledge and skills learned during the Corps Program and/or Regionally Directed Activities. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for Pipe Band – Intermediate Musician at RMNCTC. 23 Intermediate Courses Who can attend?
14 and 15 years of age Completed the Silver Star level Be physically fit and in good health Be recommended by the Corps’ Commanding Officer and approved by RCSU (NW). Version 2015

24 Intermediate Courses Additional Prerequisites
Expedition Instructor Applicants are to successfully obtain CFAIP Bronze Level for their age-group by the application deadline. More information on the CFAIP can be found in CATO 14-18 Military Band - Intermediate Musician Preferably, have achieved the music proficiency level Basic Pipe Band - Intermediate Musician Preferably, have achieved the music proficiency Level 2. 25 Intermediate Courses Course Dates
Intermediate Courses (Six Weeks) 6 July - 14 August Course dates do not include travel days. Cadets must be prepared to travel up to two days, each way, prior to and after the course dates. Version 2015

26 Advanced Training Course Aim
Leadership and Challenge Course (Ghost River, AB) To provide a unique advanced leadership and challenge development activity for cadets and to prepare them to accept the responsibilities of leaders at Cadet Corps and Summer Training Centres. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for the Leadership and Challenge Course. Version 2015

27 Advanced Training Who can attend?
Leadership and Challenge Course 15+ years of age Completed the Gold Star level Successful completion of an Intermediate Level course Be physically fit and in good health. Have achieved CFAIP Bronze level for their age-group by the application date Must be prepared to participate in water activities while wearing a PFD Be recommended by the Corps’ CO, nominated by RCSU (NW), and approved by D Cdts & JCR. 28 Advanced Training Course Aim
Fullbore Marksmanship – Phase 2 (Connaught, ON) Based on the training resulting from this course, the cadet will further develop specialist skills and knowledge that will allow them to compete as an individual in a fullbore marksmanship competition. This qualification is the second phase in the preparation and selection of cadets for competitive fullbore marksmanship at an international level. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for Fullbore Marksmanship Phase 2. Version 2015

29 Advanced Training Who can attend?
Fullbore Marksmanship – Phase years of age Completed the Gold Star level Be physically fit and in good health Be recommended by the Corps’ CO, nominated by RCSU (NW), and approved by D Cdts & JCR Application is by invitation only, based on the results of participation and standing on the Fullbore Marksmanship Phase 1 Course. 30 Advanced Training Course Aim
Military Band - Advanced Musician (Vernon, BC) To teach the knowledge and skills required of a Band Instructor, to provide cadets with an opportunity to develop their instructional skill and style, and to train cadets as musicians capable of playing and leading in a unit Military Band. Version 2015

31 Advanced Training Who can attend?
Military Band - Advanced Musician 15+ years of age Completed the Gold Star level Be physically fit and in good health Be recommended by the Corps’ Commanding Officer and approved by RCSU (NW) Priority will be given to cadets that hold music Level 2. Version 2015

32 Advanced Training Course Aim
Pipe Band - Advanced Musician (Ghost River, AB) To teach the knowledge and skills required of a Band Instructor, to provide cadets with an opportunity to develop their instructional skill and style, and to train cadets as musicians capable of playing and leading in a unit Pipe Band. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for Pipe Band – Advanced Musician at RMNCTC. 33 Advanced Training Who can attend?
Pipe Band - Advanced Musician 15+ years of age Completed the Gold Star level Be physically fit and in good health Be recommended by the Corps’ Commanding Officer and approved by RCSU (NW) Priority will be given to cadets that hold music Level 3. Version 2015

34 Advanced Training Course Aim
Basic Parachutist Course (Trenton, ON) To qualify the cadet as a Canadian Armed Forces Basic Military Parachutist. Version 2015

35 Advanced Training Who can attend?
Basic Parachutist Course Minimum of 16 years of age before 1 July of the year of the course Completed the Gold Star level Successful completion of an Intermediate Level course Meet the CAF medical standard described in CATO 42-05 Achieve the CAF standard of fitness described in CATO 42-05, which includes: - Run 1.6 km in a maximum of 7 mins and 30 secs; - 31 consecutive sit-ups; and - 7 consecutive chin-ups. Be recommended by the Corps’ CO, nominated by RCSU (NW), and approved by D Cdts & JCR. Version 2015

36 Advanced Training Course Aim
RCAC National Rifle Team (Connaught, ON and Bisley, England) To provide cadets the opportunity to compete in national / international largebore rifle competitions, to introduce cadets to the British Army Cadet Training Program, and to participate in cultural activities. Note that cadets who have a participation limitation which precludes them from handling a rifle will not be selected for the National Rifle Team. Version 2015

37 Advanced Training Who can attend?
RCAC National Rifle Team 15+ years of age Completed the Gold Star level Be physically fit and in good health Be recommended by the Corps’ CO, nominated by RCSU (NW), and approved by D Cdts & JCR Application is by invitation only, based on the results of participation and standing on the Fullbore Marksmanship Phase 2 Course. 38 Advanced Training International Exchanges
Outward Bound - Scotland Outward Bound - Wales Maple Leaf - England Army Cadet Exchanges (ACE) (countries TBA) (Connaught, ON and various host countries) To develop cadets’ leadership skills, to introduce them to the host country’s cadet training program / military, and to participate in cultural activities. Version 2015

39 Advanced Training International Exchanges
Exchanges are difficult and challenging! Cadets must be able to adapt to a different culture. This can be uncomfortable! The food is different, accommodations are different, and the training is different. That is part of the challenge and the experience. Cadets must be willing to accept this when applying for International Exchanges. Version 2015

40 Advanced Training Who can attend?
International Exchanges Minimum of 16 years of age before 1 July of the year of the course Completed the Gold Star level Successful completion of an Intermediate Level course Be physically fit and in good health. Have achieved CFAIP Bronze level for their age-group by the application date Be recommended by the Corps’ CO, nominated by RCSU (NW), and approved by D Cdts & JCR. Version 2015

41 Advanced Training Additional Considerations
Priority in selection will be given in accordance with the ranking of candidates in the National Star of Excellence (NSE) standings versus other nominees. For further information regarding selection criteria for Advanced Training opportunities, see CATO Note that cadets who have a participation limitation that precludes them from being outside of 30 minutes of physician services will not be selected for any Advanced Training Courses or Exchanges. 44 Where is summer training conducted?
Vernon, BC Vernon Cadet Training Centre Located in the interior of BC on the north end of the Okanagan valley. The training centre is located in the City of Vernon Cadets are housed dormitory style in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in the barracks. Additional facilities include: games room, canteen, internet café, cadet bank, church, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

45 Where is summer training conducted?
Whitehorse, YT Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre Located at Boyle Barracks which is 20 km south of the City of Whitehorse, just off of the Alaska Highway Cadets are housed dormitory style in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in a separate building Additional facilities include: canteen, internet café, cadet bank, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

46 Where is summer training conducted?
Ghost River, AB Rocky Mountain Cadet Training Centre Located in the Rocky Mountain Forest Reserve km NW of the City of Calgary and 45 km NW of the Town of Cochrane Cadets are housed in eight person rooms in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in a separate building Additional facilities include: canteen, internet café, cadet bank, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

47 Where is summer training conducted?
Cold Lake, AB Cold Lake Cadet Training Centre Located on CFB Cold Lake - approximately 400 km NW of the City of Edmonton Cadets are housed in two or four person rooms in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in the barracks Additional facilities include: canteen, internet café, cadet bank, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

48 Where is summer training conducted?
Connaught, ON Connaught Cadet Training Centre Located on the Connaught Ranges - 20 km north of the City of Ottawa Cadets are housed in six person modular tents with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in a separate building Additional facilities include: canteen, internet café, cadet bank, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

49 Where is summer training conducted?
Trenton, ON Trenton Cadet Training Centre Located on CFB Trenton - 97 km west of the City of Kingston and 175 km east of the City of Toronto Cadets are housed in dormitory style rooms in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Washrooms are located in the barracks Additional facilities include: canteen, internet café, cadet bank, and medical inspection room. Version 2015

50 Who conducts and supervises the courses?
Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) Officers primarily staff the summer training centres with supplemental staff from the Regular Force, Primary Reserve, Civilian Instructors, and contractors Senior cadets are also employed as Staff Cadets to assist with supervision and instruction The ratio of CIC Officer to Cadet is approximately 1:10. 51 How do cadets get to and from the training centres?
All transportation is organized and paid for by DND Cadets may travel by bus, commercial air, or military aircraft Cadets are escorted or met on all legs of their journey If parents request special transportation arrangements, they will be financially responsible for those arrangements The dates listed are the course dates and cadets may travel up to two days, each way, prior to and following the course. 52 How do cadets apply? All cadets will complete the same application form (General Training, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced Training, and Staff Cadet) All applications will be entered in Fortress by corps staff Any additional information you may require is available from your corps staff. 53 How are cadets selected?
Corps Commanding Officers review each cadet’s application and prioritise them by level Applications are entered in Fortress by 1 February Applications are reviewed by staff at RCSU (NW) Cadets are course loaded in order of the priority list provided, however, there are limited positions available (billets are created for Summer Training for 30% of the cadet population) Corps are notified which cadets are selected by 1 April . 54 Completing the Application
Every year cadets are not selected because of incomplete information. Here are some specific items to pay particular attention to: Fitness Evaluation If you have not participated in the CFAIP this Training Year, you will need to do so before the application date and have the results entered into Fortress. 55 Completing the Application
Annual Validation If you have not returned the Annual Validation form with any changes and/or the information has not been verified in Fortress, the application cannot be processed Medical Health Changes If your medical information has changed or you have not completed the medical health questionnaire this training year, you must let the corps staff know. The medical information must be the most current available (validated this training year). Version 2015

56 Completing the Acceptance and Consent From
Once you have been selected you will receive an Offer of Participation Form. There are some specific items to pay particular attention to: Version 2015

It is extremely important that you check all the information on this form to make sure it is correct. Make any corrections necessary Ensure that all other sections of the form are completed including: Leave pass restrictions Alternate family or friend contact Cadet signature Parent signature Version 2015

58 1 February 2015 Application due date?
Any applications entered into Fortress after this date will still be considered, however, they will be placed at the bottom of the priority list. Version 2015
