What will light do in the following 3 situations?

Light travels in a straight line But when it hits an object it can do 1 of 3 things….it can… 1) be reflected

Light travels in a straight line But when it hits an object it can… 2) be transmitted (pass through)

Light travels in a straight line But when it hits an object it can… 3) be absorbed

Absorption Absorption is the disappearance of an EM wave into the medium Absorption can cast shadows

The 3 ways that light behaves

Light waves interact with materials Light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed…but why?

It depends on whether the object is transparent, translucent or opaque

Transparent Transparent materials allow light to pass through so that objects behind can be clearly seen. Glass windows, glass doors, fish tanks, water, saran wrap

Translucent Translucent materials transmit some light but cause it to spread in all directions You can see light through these materials but not clearly Lampshades, frosted glass, sheer fabrics, notebook paper

Opaque materials do not allow any light to pass through them Construction paper, Trees, Animals, Footballs Opaque

LET’S REVIEW TRANSPARENT TRANSLUCENT OPAQUE

This science flask is …. Transparent Translucent Opaque

This lamp shade is… Transparent Translucent Opaque

This vase is …. Transparent Translucent Opaque

Aluminum Foil is… Transparent Translucent Opaque

Saran Wrap is …. Transparent Translucent Opaque

Wax paper is…. Transparent Translucent Opaque

This rock is…. Transparent Translucent Opaque

The water in the fish tank is ….. Transparent Translucent Opaque

Tissues are… Transparent Translucent Opaque

Notebook Paper is… Transparent Translucent Opaque
