8 The History of Chinese Shadow Puppetry 罘 Began over 2,000 years ago 罘 The first puppets were made with paper. Then they were made out of animal hides, or pi ying. 罘 Princes during that time had paid puppeteers, sometimes as many as eight, working for them.

10 A Business of the Five Video Clip 罘 Takes five people for a puppet troupe. 罘 One person operates the puppets, another plays a horn, another plays the fiddle, one person plays percussion, and the last person sings. 罘 The person who sings does the voices for all of the puppets.

12 The Stage 罘 The stage has two parts: the screen and the light behind the screen. 罘 Our stage is made out of wood. 罘 Traditional screens were lit with coconut oil lamps hanging on bamboo frames. For our screen, we are using fabric and for our light we are using a projector.

13 Making Your Own Puppet Show 罘 Work with a partner. 罘 Decide on two jokes or a short play, and perform a brief puppet show for the class. 罘 You’ll have time to: 罘 Pick your jokes/play 罘 Make your puppets 罘 Practice your show 罘 Mr. H and Ms. P will model for you.

14 Steps For Your Puppet Show 1.Choose a partner. 2.Select two jokes OR a short play. 3.Decide who will say each part of each joke OR the play. 4.Make your puppets. 5.Practice your show with your partner. 6.Perform for the class!
