4 What is Telematics?

The National Telematics Framework A performance based approach to technology Defined roles and responsibilities between operators, regulators and telematics providers (to minimise real or perceived conflicts of interest) Ensures privacy by design One box, many uses Policy and end-use agnositc 5

The National Telematics Framework 6 Data Commercial Applications (Productivity)

The National Telematics Framework 7 Data Commercial Applications (Productivity) Compliance Applications (Safety)

How is Telematics used in the road transport industry? Vehicle telematics can be a powerful and valuable tool to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, security and safety of vehicles, drivers, and transport companies It facilitates the effective management of a variety of factors such as routes, speeds and loads, to improve safety, productivity and reduce vehicle wear, transportation times and overall operational costs 8

How is Telematics used in the road transport industry? Some practical applications of commercial vehicle telematics include monitoring of: Vehicle – position movement, status and behaviour of a vehicle or fleet of vehicles and compliance Security – vehicle and consignment access, vehicle and IVU tampering, driver safety and security Operational Performance – engine and transmission performance, maintenence, fuel usage, logistics and better fleet utilisation 9

Telematics IVU Specification Users demand hardware requirements for: Reliability Accuracy Security Robustness These common requirements are contained in the Telematics IVU Functional and Technical Specification Hardware provides the basis for current and future uses and telematics applications 10

Telematics IVU Specification 11 The Specification is available on the TCA website: www.tca.gov/ivu Transport operators can use the Specification to: Make comparisons between IVU types Become informed procurers of telematics hardware

The industry is leading the way… The good news… The transport industry is already leading the way During 2014, it was estimated that around 25,000 heavy vehicles are already fitted with hardware which satisfy key TCA requirements 12

Intelligent Speed Management (ISM) 13 ISM is a set of operating requirements necessary to accurately measure vehicle speed using GPS Any operator which utilises telematics systems that reference the Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor vehicle speed can benefit from ISM The ISM brochure is available at www.tca.gov.au www.tca.gov.au

Case Study 1 14

Case Study 2 15 Innovative freight vehicle with IAP in urban environment - Quad axle - steerable Productivity increase of 14.6% per load or an additional four pallets for each trip Fewer journeys resulting in reduced emissions and less trucks on the road, while undertaking the same task

Case Study 3 16 Vehicles fitted with the IAP, 24/7 real time GPS tracking and OPTALERT (fatigue/drowsiness technology) Vehicles are limited to 95km/h, unless road conditions deem it necessary to drive slower A lower environmental footprint per tonne-kilometre 6% reduction in trips, saving around 30,000 litres of fuel per annum
