2 Lesson Objectives TLW be able to recognize pronouns in sentences. TLW be able to define antecedent. TLW be able to identify a pronoun and its antecedent in a sentence. TLW be able to ensure proper pronoun- antecedent agreement in a sentence (Pronouns should agree in number and in gender with their antecedents.) TLW be able to create his/her own sentence using pronouns and antecedents that are given, ensuring that the pronouns and antecedents agree.

3 Pronouns A pronoun takes the place of a noun.  Ralph left his notebook in the band room. “His” takes the place of Ralph.

4 Pronouns cont. The students wrote down their assignments. ““Their” takes the place of students.

5 Antecedents An antecedent is the noun that the pronoun replaces.  Ralph left his notebook in the band room. “Ralph” is the antecedent.

6 The students wrote down their assignments.  “Students” is the antecedent.

14 A Rule To Remember: A pronoun must agree in number and gender with its antecedent.  Number - whether the pronoun is singular or plural  Gender - whether the pronoun is masculine, feminine, or neuter (neutral)
