3. Classical Greece I Persia attacks Greece 1st War 1. As Greek empire spread they came into contact with the Persian Empire 2. The Greeks helped an unsuccessful revolt in the Ionian States. 3. When the Persians invaded they came with in 26 miles of Athens before they were defeated. 2nd War 1. A new Persian leader (Xerxes) vowed revenge. 2. The Persian’s then invaded again. (150,000 troops, 700 naval ships plus supply ships) The Greeks defeated them again. 3. The message of their victory was carried by a messenger. This historic 26 mile run from Marathon to Athens became know as the Marathon.

4. Classical Greece II Age of Pericles 1. The period after the Greek victories became known as the Age of Pericles. It was this time period when Athens developed a Direct Democracy through mass meetings. (every 10 days in the assembly) A. every male citizen 18 years or older could vote B. assembly passed all laws C. had paid officeholders (this allowed the poor to become involved in politics) D. had ten elected generals that enforced the laws E. Ostracism- write on a broken pottery fragment a harmful persons name. If 6,000 members voted yes the person was banned from the city for 10 years.

6. Classical Greece III Peloponnesian War 431-404 bc 1. War between Sparta and Athens 2. Neither could tolerate each others political systems. 3. Athens could not defeat Sparta in battle so stayed behind city walls and used navy and allies to get supplies. 4. Sparta surrounded the city and hoped that Athens would come out and fight. 5. In second year a plaque broke out. (Killed 1/3 of population) 6. The war lasted another 27 years. 7. 405bc Athens fleet was destroyed. 8. The next year Athens surrendered, its walls were turn down, and navy was disbanded. 9. Result of the war was that for the next 70 years Sparta, Athens, and Thebes struggled to dominate Greek affairs.

8. Classical Greece IV Daily life in Classical Athens 1. Population 150,000 2. 43,000 citizen males 3. 35,000 foreigners 4. 100,000 slaves 5. Slaves usually worked as domestic servants, or farm hands, but sometimes worked in industry for their owners. Almost every citizen had at least one slave except for the poor.

9. Classical Greece V Athenian Economy 1. Was based on farming and trade. 2. Imported 50%-80% of the grain they needed to feed it people.

10. Classical Greece VI Women in Athens 1. Women except for religious ceremonies or festivals were excluded from public life. 2. They could not own property. 3. Always had to have a male guardian. (especially if in public) 4. Had two jobs: bare children & care for household. 5. Were married at age of 14 or 15. 6. Were not provided a formal education.

11. The main item of clothing for men was a tunic, called a chiton, These were big squares of cloth, held in place by pins at the shoulders and a belt round the waist. They were made from wool in the winter or linen in the summer. Women also wore clothing which was made from big square piece of linen or wool. They used pins in various places to hold it together. Unlike the mens, the dresses always went down to the ankles.
