9. Although Odysseus is proud of his culture, he faces many problems when he assumes that the Cyclops society is exactly like the Greek culture by following the same customs such as hospitality. Specifically, Odysseus responds to his men’s wishes to leave the Cyclops’ island by stating, “…I wished to see the cave man, what he had to offer…” (605). This is significant because Odysseus felt that the Cyclops would welcome him as a guest and give Odysseus his wealth just as he was accustomed to hospitality in his own society. However, he was wrong to assume that everyone lived like the Greeks, and he made the mistake of not accepting that other cultures are different.

12. Even though Odysseus was accustomed to Greek traditions such as hospitality, he should not have assumed that all societies had the same traditions. If Odysseus was not greedy and listened to his men when them pleaded to leave, Odysseus would not have lost so many men by the Cyclops. The Cyclops’ culture differed from the Greek culture, but Odysseus did not take this into consideration. Hospitality is tradition that not every society practices. Therefore, Odysseus should have been more open minded about the differences between the Greek culture and the Cyclops’ society.
