1 Utah’s Geology & the History of the Earth
Geologic Time and Past Eras – Expert Groups

2 Bell Activity Your words are “compress” & “sediment”
This is a no gum class. Please dispose of it properly! Bell Activity Your words are “compress” & “sediment” Find the word on your study guide and complete the following information for the word. Find the definition using a glossary. Use your own knowledge and experience to complete the rest of the definition. Where should your backpack be?

3 Does your work look something like this?
word: compress My Understanding: Definition: Draw a picture of it: Sentence: Synonym/ Example: Antonym/Non-Example:

4 Does your work look something like this?
word: compress My Understanding: Definition: to make more compact by Draw a picture of it: pressing Sentence: Compressing sediments together creates sedimentary rocks. Synonym/ Example: push together, squeeze Antonym/Non-Example: loose; expand, spread

5 Does your work look something like this?
word: sediment My Understanding: Definition: Draw a picture of it: Sentence: Synonym/ Example: Antonym/Non-Example:

6 Does your work look something like this?
word: sediment My Understanding: Definition: mineral or organic matter Draw a picture of it: deposited by water, air, or ice. Sentence: Sediments can be deposited by wind blowing dust, mud in flowing water, or even by ice carrying boulders. Synonym/ Example: dirt, silt, sand Antonym/Non-Example: lava, obsidian

7 Today we will be learning about…
Social Studies Objective – We will understand that the Earth, and Utah, has changed a lot in the past. Behavior Objective – Work Ethic: We will stay on task and create the best poster we can with the skills we have. Language Objective – We will be able to describe a past era in writing & aloud. Explain how natural forces shape the living environment and landscape. Investigate how natural forces shape the local environments. Predict how natural forces affect environments; e.g., earthquakes, volcanic action, mudslides, flooding, erosion.

8 Utah Counties Test 1 on Friday

9 Eons, Eras, & Epochs Yesterday we learned that geologists have divided the deep time of Earth’s history into manageable chunks to make it easier to study, like geographers do with land regions.

10 Reading the Past Today you will read about one of these past eras then make a poster to show what was going on at on the earth and in Utah.

11 Questions to answer about your time period.
1) What is the name of the era/eon? 2) What is the most important thing to know about this era/eon? 3) What were some other important events that happened during your era/eon? (3-5 events) 4) Did any cool (unique, special) plants or animals live during your time period? List 3 and draw a picture of 1. 5) Draw a picture of what the earth might have looked like during your time period. 6) What happened that will help shape Utah into what it is today?

12 Posters Most cool events important or facts written in complete sentences picture 3+ cool living What is organisms happening in and a picture Utah? Of them As long as your poster has all the information it should, you can design it how you want. For those of us who like a little guidance, here is what your first poster might look like…

13 Hadean Eon Let’s do the first one together.
First, we will watch a short video about the eon.

14 Hadean Eon Let’s do the first one together.
First, we will watch a short video about the eon. Next, let’s read about the Hadean Time.

15 Hadean Let’s do the first one together.
First, we will watch a short video about the eon. Next, let’s read about the Hadean Time. Finally, let’s talk about what happened in Utah at this time.

16 Let’s work Let’s fill out the first poster together.
Most cool events important or facts written in complete sentences picture 3+ cool living What is organisms happening in and a picture Utah? Of them Let’s fill out the first poster together. What do we remember about the Hadean time?

17 Let’s work Let’s fill out the first poster together.
What do we remember about the Hadean time?

18 Percentage of Time: Deep time demonstration
Let’s see how much of Earth’s geologic history was taken up by this eon. If we converted the whole history of the earth into a timeline 5 feet long, how much of line would the Hadean Eon take up. (Math!!! 60 inches x 17.5% = _______ inches) Hadean 17.5% Archaen 28.5% Proterozoic 42% Paleozoic 7% Mesozoic 4% Cenozoic 1% 10.5 inches ~10.5” 17.1 inches ~17” 25.2 inches ~25” 4.2 inches ~4” 2.4 inches ~2.5” 0.6 inches ~0.5”

19 New seating chart I will be making a new seating chart at the end of this week. If you need to ask to sit somewhere special, write it down on the clipboard at the end of the hour. (i.e. You need to sit close to the board to see.) I will honor requests that are reasonable and will not create problems.
