There will be teams of two (2) students. Students will choose their own partners. Selection of type of Robot that they will work with will be by random drawing. There will be no trading of types of robots. One (1) student on the team will be responsible for the team and act as Team Leader. Team Leader will be responsible for making the presentation to the class. Grades will be given for the following: PowerPoint slides Information in the text boxes Photographs used and if they pertain to the information in the text box. Work Cited slide and the AMA formatting PowerPoint presentation to the class References:

3 Types of robots *Industrial robots - Industrial robots are robots used in an industrial manufacturing environment. Usually these are articulated arms specifically developed for such applications as welding, material handling, painting and others. If we judge purely by application this type could also include some automated guided vehicles and other robots. *Domestic or household robots - Robots used at home. This type of robots includes many quite different devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, robotic pool cleaners, sweepers, gutter cleaners and other robots that can do different chores. Also, some surveillance and telepresence robots could be regarded as household robots if used in that environment. *Medical robots - Robots used in medicine and medical institutions. First and foremost - surgery robots. Also, some automated guided vehicles and maybe lifting aides. *Service robots - Robots that don't fall into other types by usage. These could be different data gathering robots, robots made to show off technologies, robots used for research, etc.

4 Types of robots *Military robots - Robots used in military. This type of robots includes bomb disposal robots, different transportation robots, reconnaissance drones. Often robots initially created for military purposes can be used in law enforcement, search and rescue and other related fields. *Entertainment robots - These are robots used for entertainment. This is a very broad category. It starts with toy robots such as Robosapiens or the running alarm clock and ends with real heavyweights such as articulated robot arms used as motion simulators. *Space robots - I'd like to single out robots used in space as a separate type. This type would include robots used on the International Space Station, Canadarm that was used in Shuttles, as well as Mars rovers and other robots used in space. *Hobby and competition robots - Robots that you create. Line followers, sumo-bots, robots made just for fun and robots made for competition.

5 Types of robots I will divide the class into several groups. Each group will research and present to the class information about the use of their assigned robot in today’s society. Your group will have three days to research and prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that includes the following ten information points. What task does the robot perform? What human function or task does this robot simulate? Where is the robot used? What is its work envelope (how many degrees of freedom or flexible joints does it have)? Is the robotic end effector multi-functional? If so, what other tasks can it perform? How is the robot taught to perform its task? What sensors does the robot have and how does the robot use these sensors? Name some advantages and disadvantages of using a robot to complete this task. Describe the impact that this robot has had or could have on its intended audience. What type of jobs/careers can this robot create to provide employment for people? Predict and explain how this robot may be altered to perform more or different tasks in the future. Include sketches, pictures, and/or video of the robot performing its task in your presentation.
