2 Mandate SA Veterinary Foundation Promoting an informed public To promote and advance veterinary and related biological sciences in all their aspects. This includes supporting veterinary research at all levels, to fund bursaries and loans for veterinary studies and to invest and administer various financial portfolios in order to promote the knowledge, image and status of the Veterinary and Paraveterinary Professions and practice within Southern Africa resulting in improved quality of life for animals and humans.

3 Biliary fever – what is this disease ? Promoting an informed public Disease of dogs and cats caused by a parasite that affects the red blood cells The parasite damages the red blood cell causing anaemia (blood loss) Similar to malaria in people

4 Biliary fever – what causes this disease? Promoting an informed public Parasite is Babesia canis or Babesia felis Parasite transmitted by ticks Disease is more prevalent in the summer months

7 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – clinical signs Poor to no appetite Listless Pale and sometimes yellow gums Red urine Fever Fatal if left untreated

10 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – diagnosis? Blood smear examination – which is looking at a small drop of blood under the microscope

11 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – treatment Specific drug to kill the parasite Sometimes blood transfusions Supportive therapy A delay in treatment will result in an increased expense and possibly death

12 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – treatment Specific drug to kill the parasite Let a vet treat your dog – the wrong drugs or dose can kill your dog! Dog with brain damage due to overdosage

14 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – prevention Tick control: –Sprays –“Top spots” –Dips

15 Promoting an informed public Biliary fever – prevention Tick control If possible avoid/limit contact areas that may have ticks The routinely given 3:1 or 5:1 vaccine does not prevent this disease A specific vaccine is available (Piro ® ) that can protect a dog against biliary fever
