1 Bellwork: Action Verbs
* A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being. * An Action Verb tells what action a subject is performing. Copy each sentence and underline the action verb in each sentence below: Cara apologized for her neglect. We compared the prices of the ties. The strong quarterback completed the pass. I need four books for my report on early computers. A bright red convertible passed us on the highway. Han pitched a no-hitter yesterday afternoon. The entire team missed the bus to Atlanta. Everyone in the room applauded. Chantelle outlined her report carefully. All the guests arrived on time.

* A verb phrase includes a main verb plus any helping or auxiliary verbs. A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being. Underline verb phrase in each sentence below: Most small bears can climb trees. My grandparents will be visiting us for two weeks. The telephone has been ringing all day. Water is always dripping in the sink. Jamie is wearing her favorite shirt today. We have lived in Florida for six years. You should always exercise in comfortable shoes. People were training dogs in prehistoric times. My favorite candidate was elected student council president. The American Youth Hostels organization was founded in 1934.

A spurt of venom will be released by the angry insect. Several hundred insects can be “milked” this way every day. This new source of venom has saved many lives.
