4 W HAT IS HORTICULTURE AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ?

5 Horticulture- the culture of plants for food, comfort, and beautification purposes In Latin in means “garden culture” The area of science that is related to horticulture is known as botany Botany- the study of plants and their processes Horticulture technology is the application of science to horticulture Horticulture industry is the combination of scientific technological and production activities that insure the satisfaction of the consumer

8 3 major areas of horticulture: Ornamental horticulture- the growth and use of plants for their beauty; the production and use of flowering and foliage plants to be used indoors and outdoors. Ex: landscaping Olericulture- the production of vegetable food crops; planting, storing, harvesting, processing, and marketing vegetable crops. Ex: Corn producer Pomology- planting, harvesting, storing, processing, and marketing of fruit and nut crops. Ex: apple orchard

11 Ornamental horticulture can be divided into 2 categories: Floriculture- cut flowers, potted plants, annual bedding plants Delivering floral arrangements Flower shops Landscape- production and use of plants to beautify the environment Landscape plans Landscape maintenance Landscape installation Both use foliage plants, plants that are used for their colorful greenery or leaves
