Career and Family Physical Attractiveness in Mid-Life “Empty Nest” Syndrome Depression in Mid-Life Old Age Changes in Mental Functioning They have a different kind of intelligence. Crystallized - use knowledge accumulated in life. Fluid - ability to solve abstract problems and generate new hypothesis. Crystallized stays strong, but fluid declines as nervous system declines. 2 Death and Dying Four types of doctor patient communication: Closed Awareness - Doctor (and often family) are aware, but the patient is not. Suspected Awareness - Doctors and family are aware and haven’t told patient, but patient suspects terminality. Mutual Pretense Awareness - Both parties know, but act as though nothing is wrong. Open Awareness - Both parties know and talk openly about it. Avoids distrust.

3 Death and Dying Elizabeth Kübler-Ross (1969) → helped establish thanatology. Based on interview with terminal patients, she identified 5 stages of psychological adjustment. Now called the 5 stages of grief. Five Stages of Grief 1. Denial Example - "I feel fine."; "This can't be happening, not to me!" 2. Anger Example - "Why me? It's not fair!" "NO! NO! How can you accept this!" 3. Bargaining Example - "Just let me live to see my children graduate."; "I'll do anything, can't you stretch it out? A few more years." 4. Depression Example - "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"; "I'm going to die.. What's the point?" 5. Acceptance Example - "It's going to be OK."; "I can't fight it, I may as well prepare for it."

Bargaining (1-7) Example - “Just let them win one more game, I’ll do anything.” 4. Depression (1-10) Example - “I can’t even watch them play anymore. It’s just depressing” 5. Acceptance (1-15) Example - “Go Broncos”
