French and Indian War- Between French and British in N. America (1745-1763) Britain won; France lost all land in N. America

Proclamation of 1763 Britain said no more moving west of the Appalachian Mtns Speculators (investors) who had bought land there were furious

Britain wants to get rid of debt from F&I War: 1.Sugar Act (1764): law that put a tax on molasses 2.Stamp Act (1765): tax on all printed goods (newspapers, wills, playing cards etc. needed to be stamped by the British)

Colonists were ANGRY about Stamp Act! “No Taxation Without Representation!!” Protestors burned unpopular tax collectors in effigy
