7 Working Smarter and Faster at the Source Shrink the Window, Optimize Movement to All Tiers
CV offers a true single solution. MA Source-Side Option: Smarter clients that dedupe inline, reducing 90%+ amounts transferred which shrink backup windows by 50% source DASH Copies: All tiered copies /MediaAgent (MA) are now dedupe enabled to deliver speed, reduce loads and unleash the full array of “open” targets to drive copies across your tiers, including dedupe direct to cloud. DASH Full: Dedupe optimized synthetic backup – reducing processing time from 20 hrs to 20 minutes. Dedupe Accelerated Streaming Hash (Fast, quick) Check in One check box, one architecture, one set of shared resources, one operational view Dedupe Variable Data Store (Pool) (up to 180TB per pool) DDB target Check in Global Dedupe Store: Expands dedupe pool to comprise many Storage Policies – offering higher reduction scenarios DDB Engine Upgrade: Increases Store scale (50%), doubles performance, adds resilient self-healing/automatic-recovery. Bonus Round: Adding variable block segmentation optimization, … ..oh yes, it can be set at one place too (SP).

8 Configuration Option 1: No physical servers Leverage VMs for protection
Shared Disk Library with Virtual MA’s Each VSA Server is a virtual machine that manages a group of ~50 VMs with VADP -DISK / VOL /FILE Mode Snap/Mount/Read Leverage HotAdd mode in VSA client MediaAgent collocated with VSA Virtual Server. Ensure virtual server hosting VSA/MA meets MA sizing requirements DeDupe on Media agents Windows MA VSA Server Windows MA VSA Server Windows MA VSA Server Windows MA VSA Server Virtual Layer Physical Layer Disk Library on a NAS share or Shared Static mode For deduplication, host dedupe database (DDB) on dedicated physical DDB managers. Backup Copies Open Disk Shared File System (NAS or CFS)

9 Configuration Option 2: Higher Fan-in Virtual VSA with Physical MA
Shared Storage Policy / DataMover Each VSA Server is a virtual machine that manages a group of ~50 VMs with VADP -DISK / VOL /FILE Mode Snap/Mount/Read HotAdd VM hosting VSA client Data transferred over the LAN to MediaAgent Source Side DeDupe VSA Server VSA Server VSA Server VSA Server Virtual Layer This is a good comparison slide to describe the end-to-end comparison of approaches CV (1st up) simplifies configurations by policies, auto discovery C1. On a VCB-disk backup we use the VCB cache (like all others) but we only scrape out block level changes C2. When using a –volume level we can by-pass the cache and pull incremental block level changes directly from the VM infrastructure, saving network transfer resources C3. Along we incremental space savings on the backup storage, we can also offer direct deduplication which extends the number of recovery copies you can keep on line – in the same space we can offer 30 days of recovery , not just 1-2 days.. C4. Now turning to the BUE use-case, they too use VCB, but only offer FULL IMAGE every job. Which drives more transfer, more stress on the infrastructure. C5. Fulls stack up quickly either skyrocketing the disk B2D needs or forcing older backups to tape. In our 30 day RPO example you can fit perhaps 2 days on disk before you have run out of room – disk in BUE is not a recovery area rather it is a spooling area to tape. C6. While SYMC touts BUE GRT features – the dirty secret is it only works from disk, so everything in the full images must be restaged to be mounted for extraction. That adds more complexity, time and cost to recovery. Something SYMC was trying to hide from the customer. Physical Layer Physical MediaAgent with primary on disk library using local index cache Dedupe Database Size # of MAs based on data size and throughput needs, independent on # of VSA agents MA Backup Copies Open Disk Cloud Tape Protection Copies Deduplicated, Encrypted, Tiered

10 Configuration Option 3: 100% LAN free Physical VSA/MA
VSA Server is a physical machine that manages subclients grouped by datastores -DISK / VOL /FILE Mode Snap/Mount/Read VSA agent and MediaAgent on physical server for SAN only backup - no data transferred over the LAN. Backup policies grouped by datastore for maximum performance Size physical server for maximum possible I/O, including dedicated HBA to access datastores Physical server can also host DDB if hardware requirements are met. Virtual Layer Physical Layer Data Stores SAN VSA VADP Physical server hosting VSA Client/ MA Backup Copies Protection Copies Deduplicated, Encrypted, Tiered Open Disk Tape Cloud

11 DASH Copy – Copy Incremental Blocks
Description Benefits AuxCopy just got a lot smarter. Deduped copies can now be created faster while minimizing transfer and processing by using the new Dedupe Accelerated Streaming Hash (DASH) method. Resiliency: Bandwidth throttle, job based confirmation, robust network options, HTTP/S security, restart-ability, multi- streaming , and reporting Low Impact: No rehydration, fast asynchronous copy movement of just the changed blocks to the new copy (DDB) Performance: On fast networks, read, compare and move (no rehashing-LAN mode) between any MA-OS, or switch to cache mode for WAN-mode (minimizing network lookups) Full Copy Mgmt Options: Independent copy retention, selective rules, data verification, job aging flags, MA W/L/U Remote Copy 1 DDB-1 MA W/L/U Retain 5 days DC Copy 2 AuxCopy in Dedupe to Dedupe now avoids the rehydrate / reprocessing steps – moving just the changed block/segments relative to the DDB destination The jobs are qualified and copied in normal AuxCopy rules/options – restart-ability, multi-streaming (max reader/ writers) picking, holds, pinning, mixed targets. etc. Eliminate the added complexities of host or storage replication (breaking mirrors, creating clones, attaching volumes, script central…) Avoids CDR/Replication/Sync methods. DDB-2 Retain 30 days MA W/L/U DR Copy 3 “Move just the changed blocks between any MA/copy” DDB-3 Retain 15days

17 SnapProtect™ for Virtual Servers
Use rapid fire creation of persistent recovery copies by embracing and extending native HW snapshots Protect 500 VMs in under 17 minutes Application Consistent Protection Granular File Level Recovery Multiple RPOs per day Storage Array Independent # of VMs 1000s Time to Backup Minutes 500 100 Hours VADP VCB

18 SPC/VSA on VM on ESX Proxy
SnapProtect for VSA Leverage Hardware Snapshots for fast recovery copies Description Benefits Rapid fire creation of persistent recovery copies using native snapshot technologies in storage arrays Protect 100s of VMs in minutes: With minimal impact on production VMs Multiple RPOs per day: Recover back to a few hours ago. Hardware Independent: Supports a wide variety of Storage Arrays Selective Tier 2 Backups for DR: Move selective snapshots to backup copies using VADP Embedded Deduplication: For secondary copies Application Aware Virtual Machine Pool ESX Server Pool Data Store Pool Data Stores on VMFS Fast Recovery Copies 8 hr 16 hr SnapProtect Enable for Virtual Server Agent integrates with the snapshots built into the storage arrays for Rapid Fire Creation of recovery copies of Data Stores containing Virtual Machines. When the SnapProtect job runs, the VSA agent Queisces the VMs using VADP Once the VMs are quiesced, creates a hardware snapshot of the data store LUN. Each snapshot represents a consistent recovery point at that point in time and can be used to recover VMs. Once the hardware snapshot is completed, VSA adds the snapshot to its list of recovery points. With the hardware snapshots complete, the virtual machines are unquesiced. Since the snapshots take only a few seconds to create, the virtual machines need to be quiesced for only a short time. With this method, you can create multiple recovery copies in a day for the entire virtual environment, and you can create recovery copies for literally hundreds of VMs in few minutes. With the amount of data being generated, it is no longer sufficient to simply recover to last night’s backups. Simply too much data is generated every hour and losing any of that data could be catastrophic. Creating multiple recovery points per day allows businesses to a point closer to the point of failure, rather than only to last night’s backup. This type of flexibility is crucial for the modern data center. Simpana supports a wide variety of storage arrays and does not require scripting on any of these storage systems. All that is needed is to enter the storage system details and credentials of users allowed to create snapshots. Simpana does not require entering details of individual data stores, those are automatically detected from vCenter. Enterprise class storage systems are very reliable and it is extremely rare to loose a storage LUN. However, it does happen from time to time, hence it is advisable to create a secondary copy of the data on snapshots. Simpana also includes the ability to selectively copy the contents of one of the snapshots to a secondary disk or tape target. The VSA mounts the selected snapshot on a proxy ESX server, that has been designated for this role, and leverages VADP against this snapshot copy to copy data to a secondary location. It employs source side deduplication at this time to reduce the amount of data transferred and stored. While the copy is being created, VSA also catalogs individual files to enable granular recovery of files or folders. Since the VM data in the snapshots are already consistent, there is no need to queisce the VMs again. Thus the secondary copy can be created with just a few minutes of impact on the virtual machines themselves. This combined approach is much superior to when using VADP directly on the production data stores, as it requires the VMs to be queisced for a longer period of time. The proxy ESX server can even run the ESXi version. Also this does not need to be in the same high class as the other ESX servers. It simply needs to be configured for fast IO and does not necessarily need more than 4-8 cores. SnapProtect Enabler provides the best of both worlds, it allows the creation of consistent recovery copies of VMs in minutes, that does not disrupt the production VMs, and provides the option to selectively create secondary copies for DR and granular recovery. By providing the same set of data management capabilities as in physical environments, Simpana SnapProtect allows as rapid switch to virtual infrastructure. 24 hr VSA MA SPC SPC/VSA on VM on ESX Proxy ESXi Proxy Storage “Enable rapid switch to the modern data center with confidence” Backup Copies Open Disk Tape Cloud
