OBJ: Given images, notes and activity sheet SWBAT explain how a battery works and the difference between a wet cell and dry cell battery with 70% accuracy. DN: HW check- Electric Current Booklet How A Car Battery Works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IgHj2Uim_0 Lemon Battery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtHt00AN0pU ACT: Introduction to: battery parts, a wet cell and a dry cell battery, instruments that measure electricity. **Read Battery Handout, Complete Battery Activity Sheet (front & back page) HW: Text, read p. 55-57; Complete Batteries Booklet; Read Midterm Review #2 Answer Key; Midterm Prep Quiz#1, tomorrow; Interim Exam, Jan 22; EM Exam, Jan 29. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IgHj2Uim_0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtHt00AN0pU

Battery Parts Electrode: metal strip that collects electric charges. Electrolyte (acid): a liquid or paste that conducts electricity. Terminal / Pole: end of an electrode

Wet Cell Battery Contains copper + and zinc – electrodes Liquid electrolyte (sulfuric or nitric acid) Example: car, motorcycle, boat battery Wet Cell Works: Zinc electrode and acid electrolyte chemical reaction Electrons collect on zinc electrode - Copper electrode becomes + Connecting wire to terminals, electrons move from negative to positive

Wet Cell

Wet Cell Battery

Wet Cell Car Battery

Dry Cell Battery Contains carbon + and zinc – electrodes Solid, paste electrolyte Example: flashlight (C, D cell); radio, toy (AA, AAA cell) Dry Cell Works: Outer case zinc electrode and inside paste acid electrolyte chemical reaction Electrons collect on zinc electrode Central carbon (rod) electrode becomes + Connecting wire to terminals, electrons move from zinc (–) case to carbon rod (+)

Dry Cell Battery - +

D C AA AAA Lantern Battery 9 volt battery

Instruments Used to Measure Electricity Galvanometer (Ammeter): used to measure electric current rate. Voltmeter: used to measure voltage (pushing force)
