3 What and Why? What are Relationships? Relationships are CONNECTIONS with other PEOPLE. Why do PEOPLE have Relationships? People innately want relationships in their lives. People want positive relationships because Relationships meet emotional needs Relationships enrich our lives Relationships help you get things done

4 Four Categories Relationships can be classified into four major groups FAMILY SOCIAL WORK ROMANTIC What relationships would you consider to be voluntary? What relationships would you consider to be involuntary?

5 General Qualities All relationships are different but there are positive qualities that people typically seek in all relationships: Mutuality Trust Self-Disclosure Rapport Empathy Shared Interests

6 You take the LEAD……………. YOU will be partnered up with someone. You need a READER and a WRITER. With a partner, you will look up other qualities in Chapter 6. These are on the page 249. Read through the list. With your partner write out definitions of the words (what they mean to YOU). Now, look at the words again, figure out what categories these words pertain to. Do they fit into all or some; specify.

7 Learning Continued Next, turn to page 250. Read aloud the section “Development of a Relationship”. Next, identify the 3 Steps how relationships develop. Write down the steps and discuss what categories this would pertain to. (BOTH SHOULD WRITE DOWN STEPS IN YOUR NOTES) Wait to discuss with class.
