Catalonia is located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula on the Mediterranean coast, occupying an area of 31,980 square km, with a population of 6,995,206 (in 2005), which is about 16% of the Spanish population. The global GDP was 169.855 millions € in year 2005. The Catalan contribution to the Spanish economy currently accounts for 19% of total Spanish GDP, with a share of 28% and 29% of total Spanish exports and imports respectively.
