Water Saving Seed Raising Container Creating Bamboo Skewers Water Saved Plastic Milk Carton Small Bucket or Pot Drainage Holes Potting Mix Seedling Rubber Band Draft Design

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Knowing Procedure Materials Needed: One Small Bucket or Flower Pot 1 Plastic Milk Carton Stanley Knife or Scissors 2 Steel or Bamboo Skewers 1 Rubber Band Potting Mix Seeds or Seedling Drill with 4mm Drill Bit

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Knowing Steps How To Make: Cut a 2 litre plastic milk carton in half using a Stanley knife or scissors. Drill four small holes in the corners of the open end of the carton for the bamboo skewers. Push the bamboo skewers through these holes and secure at each end with a piece of the rubber band to stop the skewers moving. Make sure the skewers are long enough to sit on top of the bucket or flower pot. Rubber Band

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Knowing Drill 10-12 small holes in the base of the carton for drainage. Fill the milk carton with potting mix. Plant the seeds or seedling in the potting mix.

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Knowing Place the milk carton inside the bucket using the skewers to suspend it. Water and fertilise the potting mix – the water should pass through the carton and be collected in the bucket below so it can be used again and again.

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Understanding This water saving device can water your plants over and over again because it sits on top of a bucket which collects the water that passes through the drainage holes in the base of the device. This means that when the potting mix starts to dry out, you can re-water your plant with the same water instead of having to use more water. Putting fertiliser in the water means that this is also saved and the plant is feed each time you water it. This is how it works:

Water Saving Seed Raising Container Evaluative What I Have Learned: I learnt that you can gather very common household objects to make a water saving device. I also learnt how to use a drill! It taught me that with a little thought you can come up with lots of ways to save water around the house. If each house did more things like this, we could save much more water ‘a resource more precious than gold’.
