ADRICOSM-EXT PROJECT (ADRIatic sea integrated COastal areaS and river basin Management system pilot project - EXTension) WP2 – INTEGRATED CATCHMENT SIMULATOR SYSTEM ICSS FOR A RIVER TEST SITE ITALIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ITALIAN MINISTRY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND TERRITORY ADRICOSM IOC-UNESCO ING. ALESSANDRO BETTIN

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 WP2: INTEGRATED CATCHMENT SIMULATOR SYSTEM FOR A RIVER TEST SITE Task 2.1 - Definition of pilot area and mobilization Task 2.2 - Data Collection and Database Implementation Task 2.3 - Models set-up and implementation

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Task 2.1 Definition of pilot area – River Ishem historical flow Average = 18,10 m 3 /s Maximum = 1200 m 3 /s Minimum = 1,6 m 3 /s

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 The City of Tirana – Population estimated is 500.000 (1.000.000 considering surrounding Villages) – Average altitude is 90 meters above sea level, annual rainfall is 1200 mm – Combined sewer system with many overflows into the River Lana and into the River Tirana – Foul water is discharged without treatment

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Tirana and surrounding rivers Tiranes Lana

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 River Lana and sewer discharge CSO – Combined Sewer Overflow Pollutants (COD) Flow

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Basic characteristics of the ISHEM River basin Flow records from permanent stations River cross sections Detailed maps of the river area 1:25.000 Population Water quality parameters from historical measurements Task 2.2 Data Collection – River ISHEM

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Task 2.2 Data Collection – Tirana Sewer System Network maps and drawings Digitalized drawings of the sewer system Longitudinal profile of main collectors Network schematization Watershed design Design rain events (5 Years Return Period – 60’) Population

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MOUSE RUNOFF: surface runoff models for urban catchment applications MOUSE HD: hydrodynamic network model with RTC capabilities MOUSE TRAP: pollutants processes affecting catchments surfaces and drainage networks (Advection/Dispersion) MOUSE is a professional engineering software tool for the simulation of hydrology, hydraulics, water quality and sediment transport in urban drainage and sewer systems MOUSE DHI – MAIN FEATURES

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MOUSE sewer model - HD module Population: 514,000 Area: 1,234 has. 264 nodes 280 links 106 catchments 5 outlets: 4 discharging to Tiranes river and 1 discharging to Lana river 14 CSOs to Lana River (Total discharge in LANAOUT) No WWTP exists in Tirana.

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MOUSE sewer model – Hydrodinamic Simulations Simulations were conducted for two conditions: – Dry Weather Flow – Wet Weather Flow, design rainfall (TR = 5yrs, 1 hour duration) Design Event TR = 5y, 60 minutes duration Total Discharge = 137.000 m 3 Total COD = 164.000 Kg Total SS = 8.500 Kg

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MOUSE sewer model – Water Quality module COD concentrations at main outlets in DWF condition

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MIKE11 DHI – MAIN FEATURES The software MIKE 11 (DHI) allows to simulate: open channel flow and floods in surface waters (rivers, streams, channels, etc.) unsteady flow conditions and dynamics of water quality (BOD, NH4, DO) along the modelled river solid transport and fluvial morphology (erosion - sedimentation) “Dam break” effect scenarios and flood events forecast in real time

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 The river model has two secondary branches, the TIRANES river (22 km) and the LANA River (23 km), and one main river, the ISHEM, with a length of 35 km. MIKE11 river model – HD module

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 MOUSE-MIKE11 Integration The OUTLETS and CSOs modelled in MOUSE were considered as point sources of pollution to the river (boundary conditions) MOUSE results (COD, NH4 and TSS) were imported into MIKE 11

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Results: Water Quality in the river in Wet Weather 130 mg/l RIVER LANA Lana Inlet 75 mg/l RIVER TIRANA

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Results: Water Quality in the river in Dry Weather 60 mg/l RIVER LANA Lana Inlet 12 mg/l RIVER TIRANA

ADRICOSM-EXTension Final Meeting, - Roma 20-21 November 2006 Conclusions Tirana sewer system discharges a big amount of polluters in the surrounding receiving waters both in dry weather and in wet weather. The total flow discharged in wet weather during 4 hours (5Y 60’) is comparable with the total foul water produced during 24 hours in dry weather (500.000 eq.inh.). River Lana is the most critical branch due to the low flow and the high discharge. Improvements will be achieved with the following works: – building of the waste water treatment plant – restructuring and control of combine sewer overflows – Implementation of a continuous monitoring system of flow, rain and water quality
