1 Hazards covered by P1 App 4, Env: Rural, Moorland, Built and Woodlands. Site Description: Exposed upland heather moorland with rocky paths along the ridge top. SSSI meadow on the lower slopes. The Bog visitor centre open Wed – Sun (10 – 5) March to Oct. Snailbeach is an old mining area with spoil heaps, mine shafts (blocked off) and visitor centre. Guided mine tours can be arranged. Nearest Phone: payphone by village hall in Snailbeach. Nearest Dwelling: The Bog visitor centre (SY5 0NG), Pennerley Houses (SY5 0NB), Upper Vessons Farm (SY5 0SG), Snailbeach houses (SY5 0NZ) Nearest Vehicle Access: Track to ridge from Pennerley (landrover only). Knoll’s car park at The Bog (No access between Bog and Devils Chair). Car park at Snailbeach. Minor road parallel to spoil heap and mine buildings. Access rights: Owned by Natural England. Turn left at Ploxgreen, signed Snailbeach, parking approx 1 mile on the right. Continue along road until reach the turn on the left for Pennerley, coach drop on road (see map) or mini-bus access right up to the reservoir. Continue to the Bog Visitor Centre, car and coach park on right. Continue up to the Knoll’s car park. Check weather forecast Sometimes cattle grazing the site Exposed site, sometimes low cloud Paths and surrounding ground is very uneven and rocky and they are often sloping Prickly gorse bushes in places Rocks may be sharp Coach drop off Cow shed shelter at renovated miners cottages Natural England have Landrover access to some of the site from Pennerley, but not between Bog and Devils Chair Coach pick up and toilets. Check mens before U18’s use. Coach pick up Shorter route by ½ hour Working Information Card to be carried in safety sack Mine visitor centre, mine shafts (all blocked off) and old mining equipment. If having a mine tour led by mine staff use their risk assessment Road Crossing Minibus parking via poorly surfaced track. Landrover can go up this track to ridge. Pennerley Meadows SSSI High rocks (falls and falling objects from above) Path can be slippery (often flooded) when wet Trip hazard immediately below stile Low rails at sides of path forming trip hazard Knoll’s (Top) car park Coach drop off. Bog car park (larger than top car park) Pennerley coach drop off at viewpoint, walk on road to stile. Steep hill through pine plantation. Heather Moorland study site.
