WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World Safety Advocates on Use of ICTs Worldwide Safety and Health Advocates for their concern on driver distraction, have been successful with more than 40 countries to restrict or prohibit the use of handheld phones while driving. 4

WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World Automakers on Road Safety Automakers, Service providers and High- tech companies are pushing forward to bring other potentially distracting services and gadgets, including access to the World Wide Web and e-mail, 3D maps/navigation and high-definition video, to the front seat. 5

WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World ITU and Road Safety FG CARCOM Created in 2009 to encourage the participation in this activity of members of other standards organizations involved in car and Telecommunications/ICT industries, including experts and individuals who may not be members of ITU. FG Driver Distraction Created in 2011 has been instrumental in raising awareness around ITU-T activity on driver distraction and the scale of this workload, as well as in providing clear direction to ITU-T’s driver-distraction work plan. 6

WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World FG CARCOM Draft Recommendation P.VSSR Will guarantee a high quality speech communication in cars and will lead to significantly reduced driver distraction due to poor audio (communicational) quality in cars. 7

WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World FG Distraction G.SAM (Mechanisms for managing the situational awareness of drivers) will define mechanisms for prioritizing navigation G.V2A (Communications interface between external applications and a Vehicle Gateway Platform) will define the communications interface between the app and the driver-vehicle interface (DVI) P.UIA (User Interface requirements for Automotive applications) will recommend characteristics of the auditory social media message 8

WTISD 2013 ICTs and improving Road Safety Committed to Connecting the World How you can contribute Contributions from Member States as well as Industry Partners to progress and conclude standards whose implementation will avert driver distraction and ensure road safety. Member States and industry partners to promote the use of safe interfaces and hands-free devices in vehicles and take action to eliminate technology-related distractions while driving. Member States to promote national policies to encourage the use of ICT in enhancing road safety. 10
