Water is the component that appears in greater abundance in the earth's surface - it covers 71% of the planet. It is vital for all known forms of life. Water on Earth moves continually through the water cycle of evaporation and transpiration, condensation, precipitation and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Only 1% the water is fit for human consumption.

Water consumption in Portugal is estimated at approximately 7.500.000.000 m 3 /year in Agricultural, Industrial and Urban sector. Acording to WWF, Portugal occupies 6 th place in Water Footprint ranking, with the estimated consumption of 2.260 m 3 /person/year, among 151 countries. This amount is equal to a Olimpic Pool content. Source: PNEUEA 2012-2020

Not all water demand by sector is actually used, there is a significant part associated with inefficiency and loss of use on water that is actually captured. Urban Agriculture Industry

The agricultural sector uses 78% of the overall water demand in Portugal. It is the European country with highest amount of water withdrawn for agricultural uses per capita (with 880m³/p.c.), only surpassed in the Mediterranean region by Syria (1.169 m 3 ).

1.While brushing your teeth keeps the tap closed? 2.On average, how long does it take to take a shower/bath? 3.Takes the water from the shower, as long as it warms, to water the plants, do washes or use the toilet? 4.Keep the taps in good condition to prevent leaks? 5.In the event of leaks, repairs quickly? This questionnaire was applied 25 citizens of Aveiro region.

6.Uses the ecological programs of dish/cloths washer? 7.Do you reuse the rain water? 8.Do you prefer to use tap water or carboy for consumption? 9.Do you water the garden in the morning or evening, when the evaporation is lower? 10.Do you prefer to take a bath or a shower?

Question 1 - While brushing your teeth keeps the tap closed? If you turn off the water while you brush your teeth, you’ll save up to 15 liters a minute. That’s up to 750 liters a week for a family of four.

Question 2 - On average, how long does it take to take a shower/bath? Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes and you’ll save up to 3.785 liters per month.

Question 3 - Do you use the shower water, while it warms up, to water the plants, washing or flushing?

Question 4 - Do you keep the taps in good conditions to avoid leaking? Question 5 - In case of leaking, do you fix it quickly? A dripping tap wastes at least 5.500 liters of water a year: that's enough water wasted to fill a paddling pool every week for the whole summer.

Question 6 - Do you use the ecological programs of the cloths/dish washer? In a regular programme, a full machine will use around 10 litters of water, while in a economic programme will only use 7 liters.

Question 7 - Do you use the rain water? A rain barrel will save the average homeowner about 4.921 liters of water during the peak summer months, or 40% of total household water use.

Question 8 - From where do you drink water? It takes 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water. Tap water quality is regulated so it’s safe to drink.

Question 9 - Do you water your garden during the morning or night, when the evaporation is lesser?

Question 10 – Do you rather…? A bath typically uses around 80 liters, while a short shower can use as little as a third of that amount.

Portugal emerges as EU’s top water-saving country Portugal is the EU’s number one country when it comes to saving water according to a special Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the EC to provide a look into citizens’ impressions of the environment and environmental problems. According to the ‘Attitudes of European Citizens towards the Environment’ survey, almost two- thirds of the country’s citizens, or 63 percent (the highest result of all 28 Member States), said that they have reduced their water consumption for environmental reasons. Portugal was also the country with the highest percentage of citizens reducing their water consumption in the home. “While Portugal recorded a substantial increase in the proportion of respondents who reduced their water consumption, there was a contrasting picture in most other countries, with substantial declines occurring in many cases”, such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania and Cyprus, the survey stressed. http://www.theportugalnews.com/news/portugal-emerges-as-eus-top-water-saving-country/32729
