FOUNDATION The Skye Foundation Scholarships Including the Skye Cambridge Scholarship & the Skye Foundation Oxford Clarendon Scholarship

FOUNDATION Scholarship Criteria  The Skye Foundation and the Skye International Foundation award a number of annual scholarships to postgraduates of exceptional merit who intend to read for a higher degree or prosecute research under the direction of leaders in their particular fields.  Under exceptional circumstances, awards may also be made in support of non-degree courses at postgraduate level.  The Trustees may, at their discretion, also award funds towards purchase of research materials and equipment required by candidates selected for support.  The field of study is unrestricted. Awards are tenable at South African universities with a proven record of quality research in the relevant field or, at the discretion of the Trustees, at recognized institutions of higher learning anywhere in the world.

FOUNDATION Eligibility  Skye scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement in any discipline and they are therefore awarded only to candidates of exceptional merit who have distinguished themselves academically in their first or subsequent degrees and are likely, in the opinion of Trustees and their peers, to continue to achieve at a high level.  The Trustees will generally only consider candidates who have been nominated by Deans of faculties and supported by academic leaders in their discipline.  It is not possible for candidates to apply directly for support and any applications so received will not be acknowledged.  The Trustees may actively seek suitable candidates through approaches to local research universities.  Candidates would normally be South African Citizens who are under the age of 30.

FOUNDATION Documentation Required  Deans wishing to make a nomination should do so in writing and provide the following additional documentation:  The candidate’s full curriculum vitae and an abridged 2-page version  Letters of support from at least two faculty members or leaders in the relevant academic discipline  Full details of the course of study to be followed, including a motivation for the choice of institution, name and contact details of the supervisor (if applicable), duration of course and copies of the letters of acceptance by the university and college (if applicable)  Details of costs of tuition, living and other expenses  The candidate’s e-mail, postal and home address and telephone numbers  Full academic transcript

FOUNDATION Nominations  Please note that availability of funds may restrict the number of candidates that we are able to consider and we cannot guarantee that your candidate will be interviewed.  Awards are decided at a Trustees meeting held in April/ May each year. Nominations must reach us by the end of January 2015 at the latest. Trustees’ decisions will be made known in May, leaving ample time for the candidate to make the necessary arrangements.  Nominations in support of higher degree or post doctoral study in South Africa should also be submitted by the end of January.

FOUNDATION Value of Awards  Awards are generous and may, depending on circumstances, be sufficient to cover tuition fees, living expenses, travel and other costs.  Awards are generally for one academic year and may be renewed, at the discretion of Trustees, for longer periods subject to indications of substantial progress on the part of the holder.  In the case of the PhD, early acceptance of research findings for publication would be an expectation, as would presentation of findings at international conferences in the particular discipline.  Depending on the value of the Skye scholarship, Trustees may impose a limit on the value of other scholarships that can be held concurrently.

FOUNDATION Submission of Documents A hard copy of these documents should be mailed to Dr Neville Passmore, Deputy Chairman, Skye Foundation, PO Box 768, Swellendam, 6740, Western Cape, and simultaneously e-mailed to nominations@skyefoundation.co.za Deans wishing to consult Dr Passmore are welcome to contact him by e-mail (frog@sdm.dorea.co.za) or telephone (082 4454303)frog@sdm.dorea.co.za
