4D space@ South Staffordshire College Steve Wileman - Chief Learning Technologist 4D Space In Further Education

Our 4D room creates a fully-immersive learning environment which allows students to experience a situation - rather than trying to imagine it. Themes are produced by using LED lighting, giant projection and surround sound and include interactive content to allow users to fully engage. By changing lighting and content, its mood can be altered to reflect the subject. Role-play, debates and more engaging methods of assessment have been triggered as a result. 4D @ South Staffordshire College Steve Wileman - Chief Learning Technologist What is 4D Creative Technology

Following the introduction of the 4D space at South Staffordshire College, The immersive space is changing the way we teach, learn and communicate to our 21st Century learners making the whole learning experience more entertaining, rewarding, engaging. The technology is having a impact particularly in practical subjects such as Public Services and is driving up their success rates !! 4D @ South Staffordshire College Steve Wileman - Chief Learning Technologist What is 4D Creative Technology

The 4D environment transforms classrooms into interactive and immersive experiences that facilitate flexible and experiential approaches to education. Pupils are able to influence, develop and take control of their own learning, whilst the role of the tutor evolves to become one of a facilitator, collaborator, producer and author. A cross curricular tool that encourages creative thinking and peer led learning, young people can programme the whole space to create their own immersive experiences.. 4D@ South Staffordshire College Steve Wileman - Chief Learning Technologist Case Study :See more at: http://www.jiscrsc.ac.uk/case-studies/other-regions/south-staffordshire- college-wm72.aspxhttp://www.jiscrsc.ac.uk/case-studies/other-regions/south-staffordshire- college-wm72.aspx What does the 4D Space provide

Now & Where Next? Drive up 4D usage across College CPD bookings How to guides Links to Free resources & tutorials 85% of teaching staff attended a demonstration during launch and follow up CPD sessions delivered throughout the year Help in an overall aim of refinement, improvement and potential evolution of 21 st Century Learning Not Just For Learners CPD for Staff

CPD sessions have shown staff how to create their own playlist of themes and use interactive switches to trigger key media elements. Relevant Images and music/video are the only content needed - the software does the rest. Since roll-out more than 45 themes have been created. No other 4D space in the UK has generated this amount of themes in such a short space of time. IMPACT

Traditionally assessments had been undertaken via written assignments and discussions. When they were incorporated into the 4D room, they allowed learners to immerse themselves in the role they were researching and use a variety of new and more engaging methods, such as news reports, documentaries and debates. Public Services, a subject not always associated with cutting-edge technology, immediately began using the resource and improved engagement and learning has ensued. IMPACT Living the experience: Public Services learners tackle a crime scene investigation.

Public Services classes saw a considerable improvement in retention and success at Cannock. At the end of the last academic year, they achieved 3% above national benchmark for achievement. The cohort was an average group, with several learners requiring additional support, so did not have an ‘above average’ recruitment standard. In turn, this boosted the number of high grades achieved on Public Services courses from 38% to 65%. Public Services learner feedback : “The 4D room is great. We can get out of the classroom and be anywhere we want to be. It helps for us set the scene and increases our understanding of situations we would otherwise not be able to experience”. IMPACT
