What is Twitter, anyway? 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits A social media service founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. Goal = Create a way to allow people to answer the question "What are you doing?" in 140 characters or less. Dubbed this activity "Micro-blogging".

Basic Twitter Terms 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Tweet: A Twitter message. Retweet or RT: When someone re-posts the message of another user. Follow: When someone signs-up to receive your tweets. Hashtag or #: A way to tag a tweet with a keyword so others can find it. Sometimes used ironically.

Basic Twitter Terms 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits "At" message or Reply: Sending a tweet that begins with a user's "@handle" or name. Sends a tweet that is seen only by them, and those who follow you both. DM: Direct message sent to a single person. They must be following you for you to do this. Shortened Link: 140 characters isn’t a lot of space! People use services like bit.ly to shorten links and track clicks.

Set up your account. 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Perfessional Tips = Pick a username or "handle" that's close to your own name so people can find you. Use a business casual photo of yourself for your profile pic. Keep your posts public. Purely Personal Tips = Use a fun pseudonym for your first name, last name and your Twitter handle. This is so that people who you don't want to connect with can't find you. You may choose to set your posts to private if you'd like.

Make it fun! 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Find and follow friends, celebrities, and comedians you like. Use Twitter search to get the scoop on a movie you want to see, or a new album. Don't want anyone to know you have Bieber Fever? Create a private list.

Make it meaningful. 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Find and follow thought-leaders, people you admire, and nonprofits working in similar areas to you. Retweet content you find interesting or inspiring. Post your own thoughts and links to what you're reading.

Understand that Twitter is different. 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Twitter is a “stream of consciousness” medium that you can step into and out of. Don’t think you have to read every message! It’s impossible. Use Twitter lists to track your VIP’s.

Hackers & Spammers 2012 MAP TechWorks, a program of MAP for Nonprofits Use a secure password! Set up Twitter on your mobile device. Delete spam accounts from your followers. Don't click on "phishy" links.
