2 Aliteration : “Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary…” It adds to the tone of the novel by more further explaining Utterson in a dark sort of manner, thus making the mood an octave darker. It makes the mood darker by the kind of word choice he uses to define Utterson.

3 Exaggeration : "...like a man restored from death— there stood Henry Jekyll." This quote is not only an exaggeration, but a simile as well, because it compares Jekyll to a man restored from death, and this is an exaggeration as well because no one can really look like a man restored from the dead. This quote has an impact on the mood by adding that feeling of weirdness and surprise to the story along with an interesting plot twist.

4 Metaphor : “Love is friendship set on fire”
This quote emphasizes the theme of friendship and is probably the only quote in this story that has to do with friendship. This quote impacts the theme by adding that everlasting impression that there is some light in this dark and gloomy story.

5 Pun : "If he be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek."
This quote is one of the few in this story that contain some comical effect in attempt to lighten the mood in this story. This quote has effect on the tone by providing some “comic relief” to this dreary story.

6 Simile : “This brief condescension to my evil finally destroyed the balance of my soul, and yet I was not alarmed; the fall seemed natural, like a return to the old days before I had made discovery.” This quote has an affect on one of the themes of this novel which is the duality of the human nature and how Jekyll let his darker half take control of his life and eventually end him. It had that effect because it tells you that his evil has destroyed the balance of his soul.
