3 CONTEXT ISTEEBU has been supported for several years by the UNICEF, an agency lead for the UN in updating and management of database which contenain socio-economic indicators. Burundinfo is a socioecomic database for follow-up the results of the national priorities such as DRSP and MDGs.

4 Context (2) Burundinfo is fed by the indicators calculated from the results of the national surveys and by the sectoral databases. Burundinfo is managed by ISTEEBU. In September 2011, with the support of an international consultant recruits by the UNICEF, the team of management of the database updated Burundinfo. The recent version is accessible in line sur:www.devinfo.info/burundinfo.

5 Burundi’s project With the end of the year 2011, Burundi was selected to implement a project initiates by the UNSD to strength the national system of dissemination of the data. This project aims at improving compilation, the availability and the dissemination of the data, in particular the data which measure the progress towards the MDGs. Within the framework of this project, it is also envisaged to improve the data-processing infrastructure of the ISTEEBU so that the Institute can at least locally lodge the database for the access by ISTEEBU’s staff and have an internal network intranet.

6 Burundi’s project (2) Thus two contracts were signed between: 1. UNICEF and the supplier of Internet " SPIDERNET " to provide a internet connection to ISTEEBU for 18 months (September 2013 to Mars 2015); 2. UNICEF and MEGABYTES to ensure the maintenance of hardware equipment of the ISTEEBU (50 computers, 3 printers and 2 servers) for 18 months also.

7 Burundi’s project (3) Within the framework of this contract, MEGABYTES will provide the following services and equipment: A) Services: I) preventive and corrective maintenance of the hardware equipment for 18 months including the following spots: - the control and the maintenance of the equipment and devices; - developments necessary and the replacement of the parts except use (parts provided by the ISTEEBU); - the diagnosis of the equipment so necessary by using suitable tools to ensure a correct operation of the material; - identification of the risks of dysfunction and improvements related to the evolution of the system or standardization; - external cleaning, the interior de-dusting of the various equipment and the cleaning of all the readers and peripherals by using the suitable products.

8 Burundi’s project (4) II) corrective maintenance / Execution of all the operations of breakdown service, repair and development necessary to ensure the correct operation of the equipment. B) Equipment: - Supply, installation and configuration of a server controller of field (isteebu.bi) and provision and installation of a antivirus (Gateway server) for 75 computers; - An inverter 5KVA; - Wiring of a network LAN (with switchers) for 50 computers; - 4 access points WIFI.

9 Challanges Usually, the internet connection was not good; The technical assistance was not done at the necessary times; The equipment provided are not good quality (switches); Inefficacy in the maintenance of the equipment; No dialogue between the supplies of services.

10 OPPORTUNITES The project was very benefit for ISTEEBU: -website was updated; -Antivirus was available for any protection of equipment viruses, - Wiring of a network LAN (with switchers) was done.

11 LESSONS LEARNT - In the future, it will be necessary to get a connection on optical fibre directly in order to bet with different the cuts from Internet observed; - ISTEEBU must contract directly with the suppliers to improve the quality of services. - It was good if internet connection, maintenance and equipment were provided by one suppliers.

12 Plan of remaining activities The project will take off with March 2015. It is expected that the connection and the maintenance of the equipment either deliver has the ISTEEBU in accordance with the contracts of service signs between UNICEF, SPIDERNET and MEGABYTES.
