3 1. Compounding is the joining of two or more words into a single word
1. Compounding is the joining of two or more words into a single word. Examples, breakfast, high school. 2. Derivation is forming of new words by combining derivational affixes or bound affixes with existing words as, in disadvise, re-ask.

4 3. Invention: new words are totally invented e.g nylon
4. Echoism: is the formation of words whose sounds suggest their meanings, e.g. hiss

5 EX 10-1 Indicate which process of formation represented compounding, derivation, invention, echoism: 1. roughneck codgerhood. 3. clink doodad dacron

6 5.Clipping is cutting off the beginning or the end of a word, or both, leaving a part to stand for the whole.

7 Give the original words from which these clipped words were formed:

8 6.Acronymy is the process by which a word is formed from the initial or beginning.

9 7.blending: Is the fusion of two words into one. usually the first part of one word with the last of another, e.g telecast

Define : Is a set of related forms having the same stem but different affixes Noun paradigm Verb paradigms Comparable paradigms

11 Noun paradigms Inflectional suffixes:models: stem: doctor,woman.
Plural:{s -pl}: doctors,women. possessive{-s ps}: doctor’s, woman’s. Plural possessive: {-s pl ps} doctors’, women’

12 EX 11-1 Write the pradigmatic forms of these nouns

13 Verb paradigms Inflectional suffixes: models Stem: show

14 Comparable paradigms Inflectional suffixes: models Stem{Er-cp}: sweeter {EST sp} Ex write the comparative and the superlative forms(two-syllable adjectives).
