16 Smith-Hale Structural Concerns In the 1980's it was obvious there were some problems with the structure of Smith-Hale. The center of the building in the student wing was settling and causing damage. There was an assessment done approximately 15 years ago when Dr. Jerry Cooper was the Superintendent that verified there were problems that would eventually need repair. At that time, the assessment stated that the building would need some work, but was not structurally unsound. When the Media Center was added to Smith-Hale there was some mud jacking work done, that included putting concrete piers under the front of the building to keep it from settling further. This was funded by the bond money that was specifically set aside for that work. This work eliminated the problems in the main office area. However, there was not enough money to complete the mud jacking in the front of the building, so it did not extent down the north end of the building. As a result there was some additional settling in the rest room by the main entrance of the building, causing some cosmetic and structural problems. The next summer the mud jacking was completed which eliminated the structural problem, although there are still cosmetic issues due to the mud jacking. Since that time there has been no additional structural damage discovered at Smith-Hale Middle School.
