LinkSCEEM-2: A computational resource for the Eastern Mediterranean
2
How it all began LinkSCEEM-1 project run from 2008-2009 – assessment of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources and users in the Eastern Mediterranean countries by HPC resources (status Nov 2012, source www.top500.org) Need for additional computational resources (regional survey LinkSCEEM-1) Saudi Arabia - 0.4%, FP7 under Grant Agreement Number: 222904
3
How it all began Conclusions: Main factors that have hindered the development of computational science in the region limited access to HPC resources limited knowledge on HPC inadequate regional connectivity limited awareness of simulation as a scientific tool LinkSCEEM-1 project run from 2008-2009 – assessment of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources and users in the Eastern Mediterranean FP7 under Grant Agreement Number: 222904
4
LinkSCEEM-2 - Establish a HPC EcoSystem in the Eastern Mediterranean Provide access to HPC resources Provide training in HPC Raise awareness for HPC research tools Bring international expertise into the region FP7 under Grant Agreement Number: 261600
5
Project consortium Regional research institutions and international centres of excellence in high performance computing (HPC) Coordinator
6
Project objectives Integrate regional computational resources Create user support and training programs Enable research of particular relevance to the region (Climate, Cultural heritage, Synchrotron) Build strong links to the European Research Area in accord with the European Neighbourhood Policy
7
Project Research Themes Cross sectional research – performance analysis and optimisation for community codes Climate – development of atmospheric chemistry climate models to study the Eastern Mediterranean region Digital cultural heritage – imaging and image processing of regional artifacts Synchrotron radiation data analysis – synchrotron data analysis and simulation on GPU systems Mediterranean and Middle East hot spot of ozone air pollution Polynomial Texture Mapping of a copy of an ancient coin from Petra, Jordan, depicting Alexander the Great or one of his successors
8
Access to HPC facilities within LinkSCEEM Regionally distributed LinkSCEEM e-infrastructure is being accessed through a joint call CaSToRC: – Cy-Tera (CPU/GPU cluster) – EUCLID (LinkSCEEM training cluster) BA: – Sun cluster (CPU cluster)

HPC training opportunities LinkSCEEM aims to offer training opportunities to new and experienced users Training efforts focus on – Online training opportunities – LinkSCEEM training events – Educational Access Program 3131
13
Online training opportunities LinkSCEEM aims at providing permanently available online training content wealth of online content already available all content presented here is freely accessible
14
Online training opportunities Overview of recommended online material – LinkSCEEM training portal (http://www.linksceem.eu/ATutor/login.php)http://www.linksceem.eu/ATutor/login.php – LinkSCEEM lectures (http://www.linksceem.eu/ls2/user-resources/lectures.html)http://www.linksceem.eu/ls2/user-resources/lectures.html – PRACE training portal (http://www.training.prace-ri.eu/ )http://www.training.prace-ri.eu/ – XSEDE User Portal (https://portal.xsede.org/web/xup/online-training)https://portal.xsede.org/web/xup/online-training
15
Supercomputing Training Portal Attempts to aggregate and filter material into distinct categories Recommends content within categories Provides an environment to browse content from categories while remaining within the website Portal Website
16
LinkSCEEM training events A mixture of events to reach new users and provide training in HPC related topics 9 Annual Events – Four 1-day user meetings – One 3-day general user meeting – One advanced 3-day cross-sectional workshop – One 3-day thematic workshop per field (Climate, Cultural Heritage, Synchrotron Radiation) Fellowships are offered for all workshops We aim to offer support that covers all basic cost
17
Educational Access Program Access to HPC resources for educational purpose LinkSCEEM offers resources dedicated to this type of access Euclid is used as the training cluster of the LinkSCEEM Project Contact us directly at hpc-support@linksceem.eu
