Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Stimulating Concurrent Engineering in Construction The EAPPM aims and motivations Raimar J. Scherer scherer@cib.bau.tu-dresden.de Ricardo J. Goncalves rg@uninova.pt Rainer Wasserfuhr wasserfuhr@ptech.de

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 EAPPM European Association on Product and Process Modelling in the Building Industry founded in Dresden 1994 by members of the European R&D Projects : ATLAS, COMBI & COMBINE

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 In Research: From Product Modelling to Concurrent Engineering 19941999 In Industry From Proprietary Models to Product Models

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 ConcurrentEngineering Engineering in the Information Society (I) PROCESS VIEW “parallel/simultaneous” (III) PEOPLE & ORGANISATION VIEW “cooperative” (II) VIRTUAL/ EXTENDED ENTERPRISE VIEW “collaborative” (IV) MARKET VIEW “value adding”  Filos - Fan - Scherer, Internal EU workshop on Concurrent Engineering, June 1998.

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Co-operative engineering The synchronized engineering of one and the same part of the product by different experts It requires a virtual product model that allows different data views of one and the same part of the product and moreover needs functionalities for data management, such as transformation consistency checking, monitoring, control and modifications of the different engineers, to guarantee a conflict-free synchronized design and manufacture.

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Collaborative engineering the collaborative engineering of physically distributed teams working on one and the same product as if working at a round table, which is made possible by an IT infrastructure.

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Simultaneous engineering at any time of the design process each product life state is taken into consideration, applying the appropriate concerned expert knowledge by means of forecasting, prognosis and simulation.

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Electronic commerce Building construction products are assembled by other products, which are supplied by other players on the global market place. These are usually not one-of-a-kind products, i.e. they are mass- production articles. An initially chosen product can easily be replaced by another similar product or another supplier can deliver the same product. Customers and suppliers should be brought together in very early phases in order to optimise their businesses.

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Brief History of Product Modelling in the Building Construction Industry

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Interopera- bility Product Model Document Management Process Model Modelling of the Engineering World

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Process ModelDocument Model CAD files contracts tenderings specifications Product Model geometry material topology time costs Workflow... persons teams enterprises roles contracts access rights Team Model Activity Model goals history activities events instantiate floorplan instantiate bearing system generate FE mesh send cost calculation Workflow centered integration of the technical engineering world

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Workflow vs. Engineering Workflow Applying Workflow systems for Concurrent Engineering requires additional functionalities: l Organisational structures which are project specific l Allow ad hoc workflows and workflow modifications l embedded mechanisms for revisions, notification and versions l embed classical project management software

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Emerging Products l Motiva DesignGroup l Nemetschek Allaska l SDRC IDEAS l SiFrame

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Trends in IT in AEC (German Market) Concurrent Engineering depends on Document Management Product Models (IFC, STEP) Workflow + Process Models Electronic Commerce IFC 2.xx E-Commerce EDMS Engineering Workflow EDMS Engineering Workflow STEP AP 225

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Application Outsourcing An Alternative? l Many SMEs hesitate to introduce complex IT environments into their everyday work l Software houses and internet providers start to offer web-based thin-client services. l Data management (installation, backup, recovery, maintenance) is done on the provider side. l organisational change remains an open problem

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 funStep Interest Group l 100 Organisations l 15 countries l 75 % Industry members

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Standard-based integrated environment to assist electronically furniture commerce

Scherer/Goncalves/Wasserfuhr CEC99 Challenges l Validate product and process models against existing applications and legacy data l compare and integrate A/E/C process models with generic product & process models from other domains, e.g. –WfMC / SWAP (Workflow) –aecXML –CORBA
