2 ER VERB SPELLING CHANGES Objective: - Learn/Review how some regular er verbs have spelling changes before the endings in certain forms Learn/Review when & how to make the changes.

3 Some regular French –er verbs have spelling changes in certain forms of the verb.

4 Some of these changes have to do with keeping a “g” or “c” soft before the “-ons” ending of the “nous” form: - nager: Je nage. / Nous nageons. - manger: Je mange. / Nous mangeons commencer: Je commence Nous commençons.

5 (It occurs only in the “nous” form, because every other ending begins with an “e.”) Je mange Nous mangeons Tu manges Vous mangez Il mange Ils mangent

6 Other spelling changes have to do with pronunciation & silent endings
Other spelling changes have to do with pronunciation & silent endings. They include: - doubling the consonant before the ending. - adding an “accent grave” on the e (è) before the ending. - changing a “y” to “i” before the ending.

7 These changes occur in the “boot” forms of the verbs
These changes occur in the “boot” forms of the verbs (The nous & vous forms remain the same as the infinitive.) Ex: Appeler J’appelle Nous appelons Tu appelles Vous appelez Il appelles Ils appellent

8 Other examples of doubling the consonant: - jeter: Je jette - rappeler: Tu rappelles - épeler: Il épelle

Another change is to put an “accent grave” on the e before the ending (This change occurs with many “-e + consonant + er” verbs.) Ex: Acheter J’achète Nous achetons Tu achètes Vous achetez Il achète Ils achètent

10 Other examples of adding a grave accent to the e before the ending: - préférer: Je préfère - répéter: Tu répètes - promener: Il promène

11 The last change is to change the “y” to “i” in the “boot forms” of verbs ending in –oyer and –ayer (Again, the nous & vous forms stay the same as the infinitive.) Ex: Nettoyer Je nettoie Nous nettoyons Tu nettoies Vous nettoyez Il nettoie Ils nettoient

12 Other examples of changing the “y” to “i”: - envoyer: J’envoie - essayer: Tu essaies - payer: Il paie
